Abstract

Early marriage is a public health issue that may increase the risk of reproductive and mental health problems among adolescent girls. Limited knowledge of the biological and psychological consequences of early marriage may increase adolescents’ vulnerability to high-risk pregnancies and various psychosocial problems. This community-based educational activity aimed to improve adolescent girls’ knowledge and awareness of the effects of early marriage on reproductive and mental health in Bori Village, East Bacan District, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku. The activities consisted of interactive health education, focus group discussions (FGDs), and the use of educational media, including leaflets and banners. Evaluation was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests to assess changes in participants’ knowledge following the educational intervention. A total of 30 adolescent girls participated in the activity. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge of the risks associated with early marriage, particularly those related to reproductive and mental health. Interactive education and group discussions helped participants understand the consequences of early marriage and the importance of preparing for reproductive and mental health before entering marriage. These findings indicate that reproductive and mental health education can serve as a promotive and preventive strategy to increase adolescent girls’ awareness of the risks associated with early marriage.
