Abstract

This study designed and implemented a prototype paddy-husk separator that integrates a 200 Wp off-grid photovoltaic (PV) power system with vibrating-sieve and pneumatic separation. The mechanical assembly uses a hollow-steel frame, a perforated sieve, an eccentric drive, and a fan, while the electrical subsystem comprises a solar panel, a solar charge controller, a 12 V battery, and a 1000 W inverter. Prototype tests were reported at input loads of 10, 15, and 20 kg. The measured AC load remained at 126-132 W, which is below the inverter power rating. The pulley ratio of a 50 mm motor pulley and a 12-inch driven pulley yields a calculated sieve-shaft speed of 196.85 rpm, compared with a 214 rpm design target. Under the reported test conditions, the highest observed processing capacity was 723 kg/h at a 15 kg input load, whereas the highest reported separation efficiency (86.2%) and the lowest reported loss (1.50%) occurred at 20 kg. These results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating off-grid PV power with dual mechanical-pneumatic separation at prototype scale. However, the study does not document paddy variety, moisture content, replicate-level variability, or the full mass-balance record used to reconstruct separation efficiency and losses; therefore, field reliability, solar autonomy, and broader performance claims require further validation.

Abstract

Abstract

Background and Objective: Authentic STEM laboratory activities can connect renewable-energy science with measurement, engineering systems, quantitative reasoning, and sustainability. This study described sugar palm bioethanol production across fermentation-time and turbo-yeast conditions using rice-husk-heated fractional distillation and examined the workflow's prospective implications for STEM laboratory education. Methods: A 3 × 5 exploratory factorial arrangement combined 10, 20, and 30 g of turbo yeast per 11 L batch with fermentation periods of 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h. Each of 15 treatment combinations was processed once. Ethanol content, distillate volume, and post-fermentation pH were analyzed descriptively, and the workflow was prospectively mapped to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and sustainability learning opportunities. Results: Ethanol content increased from 24 to 96 h at all three dosages and declined at 120 h. The highest observed value was 51% at 30 g and 96 h, with 545 mL of distillate and a qualitative pH reading of 3. The workflow supported conceptual links to fermentation science, measurement technology, biomass-heated separation, factorial data interpretation, and evidence-bounded reasoning. Conclusion: The study provides an exploratory process baseline and a defensible basis for developing a locally grounded STEM laboratory module. Because treatments were unreplicated and no students or learning outcomes were evaluated, neither statistical treatment effects nor instructional effectiveness can be claimed.

Abstract

This study analyzes the cooling performance degradation of a Modena MD 20W freezer box utilizing R134a refrigerant. The primary issues identified include continuous compressor operation, failure to achieve the target temperature of −18°C, and low discharge pressure. This research aims to analyze discharge pressure as a primary diagnostic indicator and investigate its relationship with the freezer compartment temperature. A descriptive-analytical case study method was employed, with data recorded at 25-minute intervals over 200 minutes. Measurements were conducted using a manifold gauge, digital thermometer, and clamp meter across three distinct conditions: utilizing a QD52H compressor, a Highly C-BF053L4A compressor under no-load conditions, and under a 15 kg beef load condition. The results indicated that the QD52H compressor only generated a discharge pressure of 86–110 psig (well below the normal range of 145–185 psig), yielding a freezer temperature of 12.0°C and a cooling rate of 0.084°C/min. Following replacement with the High-efficiency compressor, the discharge pressure increased to 128–145 psig, the temperature reached −20.7°C, and the cooling rate improved by 192.86% to 0.246°C/min. Under the 7 -hour beef load test, the freezer wall temperature reached −20.0°C with a core beef temperature of −2.0°C. This study concludes that discharge pressure analysis is a reliable, effective, and non-destructive diagnostic method.
