Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of stair climbing exercises in improving 100-meter sprint speed among junior high school students. The research employed an experimental method with a pretest-posttest design to measure changes in sprint performance before and after treatment. The participants were 20 students from SMP Baiturrahman Surabaya selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a 100-meter sprint test, with running time measured using a digital stopwatch. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that stair climbing training significantly improved students’ 100-meter sprint speed with a significance value of <0.05. This training method contributed to the improvement of biomotor components supporting sprint performance, including lower limb strength, explosive power, coordination, and movement efficiency. Therefore, stair climbing can be applied as a simple, effective, and economical training alternative in physical education, particularly in schools with limited sports facilities.
