Abstract

This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on traditional sports as a cultural heritage with a focus on the integration of local wisdom in character education. Although many studies discuss the physical benefits of traditional sports, there is no systematic literature review that comprehensively maps how local philosophical values are integrated into character-building instruments in schools; this study fills this gap by systematically synthesising the pedagogical role of traditional sports (Novelty). The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA protocol, which includes identifying articles through electronic databases (such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Garuda), screening based on inclusion criteria related to educational context and scientific methods, and thematic analysis of 10 selected articles from a total of 95 articles found. The results of the synthesis indicate that traditional sports play a strategic role as a means of preserving cultural identity as well as an effective medium for instilling the values of cooperation, sportsmanship, discipline, and responsibility. This integration has been proven to increase learning motivation and strengthen students’ positive character through a contextual approach. However, this study reveals that current research is still dominated by a descriptive approach, so future research using experimental or mixed methods is needed to test the concrete effectiveness of traditional sports in the formal education curriculum more broadly
