Abstract

The housing destruction caused by the 2004 Aceh earthquake and tsunami led to the large-scale construction of transitional shelters intended for short-term use prior to permanent resettlement. Although these shelters were designed with a lifespan of only two to three years, a significant number remain standing two decades later. This study re-examines the long-term condition, transformation, and reuse potential of transitional shelters in Aceh, addressing a gap in post-disaster housing research that rarely extends beyond the emergency phase. Using a qualitative case study approach based on field observations, document analysis, and literature review, the research finds that while the original shelter design showed limitations in thermal comfort, ventilation, and cultural suitability, its modular structure enabled various formsof informal adaptation. Many abandoned or vacated units have been repurposed by local communities into economic, social, and educational spaces, whereas others were sold or left neglected due to the absence of planned reuse strategies. The findings demonstrate that transitional shelters should not be regarded as disposable post-disaster artifacts, but as adaptive architectural assets with long-term social and economic value. Integrating adaptive reuse and lifecycle planning into shelter design is therefore essential for sustainable post-disaster mitigation.

Abstract

Architecture is bothart and science related to the design and construction of buildings and spaces to meet human needs. In a cultural context, architecturenot merelyreflects practical functions but also the aesthetic, social, and spiritual values upheld by society. Each building carries a story and deep meaning, which can be seen in its design, materials, and construction techniques. The Indrapuri old mosque, as an example of architecture rich in historical and cultural value, shows how architecture can reflect the historical journey of a region. Located in Indrapuri Subdistrict, Aceh Besar Regency, this mosque was built in the 17th century on the foundation of a Hindu temple, reflecting the fusionof Islamic and Hindu cultures that once existed in the area. The presence of Masjid Tuha Indrapuri serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the identity and cultural heritage of the Acehnese people. Over time, this mosque has become acenter for religious and social activities for the local community. Research and surveys on Masjid Tuha Indrapuri are essential to uncover information about its architecture, social function, and the conservation efforts made by both the community and the government.Theaccurate and relevant data obtainedfrom this conducted research cansupport the understanding of the importance of this mosque as both a cultural heritage and a place of worshipto contribute in the preservation realm and tourism in Aceh.

Abstract

This study explores how the design elements of Studio B at the Department of Architecture and Planning, Syiah Kuala University, influence students' learning behavior. Usinga descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and questionnaires. Observational findings revealed that physical elements such as lighting, ventilation, and furniture arrangement play a significant role in creating a comfortable learning environment. Questionnaire results indicated that most respondents felt moderately to highly comfortable with aspects such as lighting, air circulation, and ventilation, which positively impacted their productivity. However, a majority of students preferred to continue their learning activities in other locations outside Studio B, such as other studios, their homes, or off-campus. This suggests that while Studio B is idealtosupport learning activity, there is still room for improvement in optimizing its users' preferences. The findings of this study are expected to contributevaluable insights to the development of more effective architectural studio spaces.
