Abstract

The smallholder oil palm farming system in Pematang Jaya District, Langkat Regency, faces challenges including high production costs, dependence on external inputs, and limited utilization of local resources. This community service program aimed to empower the Murni Farmer Group through the implementation of an Integrated Oil Palm–Cattle System (SISPADU) to improve production efficiency, resource utilization, and farmer independence. The program used a participatory approach involving farmers, village government, and agricultural extension workers through identification, planning, technical training, technology implementation, mentoring, and evaluation. The technologies included fermented feed (FERMATIKSA) from oil palm waste, organic fertilizer production from cattle manure and urine, and improved group management through production and financial recording. The program involved 12 farmer members managing approximately 15 hectares of oil palm plantations and 153 cattle. Results showed improved farmer skills in utilizing oil palm waste as alternative feed and processing livestock waste into organic fertilizer. The SISPADU demonstration unit successfully integrated plantation and livestock activities into a circular production system, reducing dependence on external inputs and strengthening institutional capacity. The model has potential for replication in other smallholder oil palm areas to support sustainable agricultural development.
