Abstract

Carbonate reservoirs contain a substantial proportion of the world's hydrocarbon resources, yet predicting their reservoir quality remains challenging because of the complex interactions among depositional characteristics and subsequent diagenetic processes. This study presents a systematic literature review to evaluate the influence of cementation and dolomitization on the evolution of carbonate reservoir quality. Relevant studies were synthesized to examine diagenetic mechanisms, controlling factors, analytical approaches, and their impacts on porosity and permeability under different geological settings. The review indicates that dolomitization exerts both constructive and destructive effects on reservoir quality. Early replacement dolomitization commonly enhances intercrystalline porosity, improves permeability, and increases resistance to mechanical compaction, particularly in deeply buried reservoirs. Conversely, overdolomitization and pore-filling dolomite cement may significantly reduce pore connectivity. Cementation, especially by calcite, dolomite, and anhydrite, consistently acts as the principal destructive diagenetic process by occluding both primary and secondary pore systems, thereby decreasing porosity and permeability. The ultimate reservoir quality is governed by the timing, sequence, and intensity of diagenetic events, together with depositional facies, burial history, and structural controls on fluid migration. This review emphasizes that integrated petrographic, geochemical, petrophysical, and sequence-stratigraphic analyses provide the most reliable framework for predicting carbonate reservoir quality and reducing uncertainty in hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir characterization

Abstract

Urban river areas have a high level of vulnerability to flood disasters, including Lepo-Lepo Subdistrict, Kendari City, which faces potential hydrometeorological hazards. Limited community understanding regarding disaster risks, mitigation strategies, and preparedness measures may increase the impacts of disasters. This community service activity aimed to develop disaster awareness and improve community capacity in dealing with potential flood disasters in urban river areas. The implementation methods included preliminary surveys, disaster awareness education, focus group discussions (FGD), preparedness simulations, participatory disaster risk mapping, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test measurements. The results showed an improvement in community knowledge and awareness regarding disaster-prone characteristics, early warning signs, mitigation actions, evacuation routes, and assembly points. Furthermore, the activity produced a participatory disaster risk map that can serve as a reference for the community and local government in disaster risk reduction efforts. The program demonstrates that continuous education and active community involvement play an important role in developing a disaster-resilient community in flood-prone urban river areas.

Abstract

The Meluhu Formation is an important Mesozoic sedimentary unit in Southeast Sulawesi that records the geological and depositional evolution of the region. However, studies specifically addressing the characteristics of its sandstone remain relatively limited and show variations in lithology, provenance, depositional environment, and age interpretation. This study aims to synthesize the available literature on the lithological, petrographic, provenance, depositional, stratigraphic, and tectonic characteristics of Meluhu Formation sandstone. A systematic literature review was conducted using relevant peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and geological reports. The reviewed studies were selected based on their relevance to the Meluhu Formation and the regional geological framework of Southeast Sulawesi, and the extracted information was synthesized thematically. The results indicate that the sandstones are dominated by quartz and lithic fragments, with variable feldspar contents, and are classified as sublitharenite, lithic arenite, arkose, subarkose, and greywacke. Provenance analysis indicates contributions from recycled orogen, interior craton, and undissected arc provinces, while the depositional environment evolved from fluvial and deltaic settings toward shallow marginal marine conditions. The formation also exhibits a significant age controversy between Triassic and Middle–Late Miocene interpretations. These findings highlight the need for integrated geochronological, sedimentological, petrographic, and diagenetic studies to refine the geological history and reservoir potential of the formation.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve the competence of students at SMKN 6 Kendari in understanding the basic principles of geological mapping, particularly geological data interpretation, processing, and presentation. The program was conducted through preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages using lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, and mentoring. The training materials covered basic geological concepts, rock and mineral identification, geological map reading, satellite imagery interpretation, geomorphological and geological structure analysis, data processing, and presentation in the form of geological maps, cross-sections, and reports. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires. The results showed improved student understanding in interpreting geological data, identifying rock characteristics, reading geological maps, and presenting geological information systematically. Participants also demonstrated high enthusiasm and positive responses throughout the training. The program contributed to improving students’ technical skills and preparedness for further education and employment in the fields of geology and mining. Continued training, improved practical facilities, and sustainable collaboration between universities and vocational schools are recommended.

Abstract

Rare or accessory minerals in carbonate rocks provide sensitive constraints on depositional environments and diagenetic pathways when interpreted within petrographic and geochemical context. This review synthesizes published case studies from marine platforms, mixed carbonate–evaporite systems, saline–alkaline lakes, and hydrothermal or fault-controlled settings to evaluate how uncommon mineral phases improve paleoenvironmental interpretation beyond conventional carbonate facies analysis. Minerals such as palygorskite, sepiolite, stevensite, high-Mg calcite, proto-dolomite, huntite, magnesite, glaucony, apatite/francolite, authigenic albite, fluorite, moganite, jarosite, and alunite are shown to form under restricted physicochemical conditions linked to fluid chemistry, redox state, evaporation, microbial mediation, meteoric flushing, or hydrothermal input. Mg-clays consistently indicate alkaline, Mg-rich lacustrine systems and early diagenetic cementation pathways, whereas Mg-carbonate phase assemblages record transitional stabilization histories of carbonate minerals. Evaporite replacement products, phosphate–glaucony associations, and low-pH sulphate minerals further constrain redox conditions and groundwater evolution. Authigenic albite and fluorite serve as tracers of hydrothermal or fracture-controlled fluids. The synthesis demonstrates that rare minerals are most diagnostic when integrated into paragenetic sequences and multi-proxy screening, enabling distinction between primary environmental signals and diagenetic overprints in carbonate archives.
