Abstract

From the 1860's up to the 1940's, German missionaries under the leadership of Dr. I.L.Nommensen succeeded in converting many of the Batak Toba to Christianity, and along with the Dutch colonial government developed a Western education system in the Batak homeland. Following this, educational improvement among the Batak Toba helped foster the development of Christianity and the Church. As a further development, the Church has extended its reach from matters of personal life to the collective life of the Batak Toba. While introducing new values to the people, the Church seeks to eradicate traditional cultural values that are not in accord with its own, such as the gondang sabangunan and tortor (the ceremonial music and dance of the Batak Toba) and a number of ritual ceremonies. The Church's desire is today reflected in the book Hukum Siasat Gereja, which deals with the norms of Christian social life. Several articles in the book place restrict the musical activity of Christian Batak Toba, especially the performance of gondang sabangunan and tortor in the context of ritual ceremonies. Through an ethno historical approach, this article examines change in the functions and dynamics of gondang sabangunan and tortor performances among the Christian Batak Toba of North Sumatera. The study covers the period between the 1860's and the 1990's. Aside from discussing a number of social and cultural factors that have led to changes in the function of the ceremonial music and dance, several rulings on the performance of gondang sabangunan and tortor in the Hukum Siasat Gereja will also be discussed. The purpose of this last discussion is to show the extend of the Church's influence in the context of this change. The article also provides a discussion on the response of the Christian Batak Toba toward these rulings.

Abstract

Workshop is a production house for many craftsmen. Siponjot village has a Silaban Margu studio which produces traditional musical instruments despite the lack of inadequate workshop. The main problem with this workshop is that the production equipment facilities are still inadequate to provide optimal work results. Even by the given limitation, this studio has produced several types of gondang as its work. The excess residual material is generally wasted so that the potential economic value of using the material is immaterialized. The main target of this community service is to empower the people of Siponjot Village. The development of this craft workshop is the provision of creative economic access through the use of material left over from the production of musical instruments into fine arts in the form of handicrafts with economic, artistic and cultural values. This service has provided science and technology transfer while providing increased artistic skills through direct training to the community. It is hoped that in the future the community and craftsmen can take advantage of this potential to form an art-based creative economy in Siponjot Village.

Abstract

Hadrah is a traditional Islamic music performance art that integrates singing in the form of praises and veneration to the Prophet Muhammad SAW with accompaniment from a percussion music ensemble. Percussion instruments such as rebana, bedug, kecrek, and others play the main role in this performance. This research conducted in the city of Medan focuses on analyzing the specific playing techniques used in the hadrah percussion music ensemble, especially the interlocking technique where the rhythmic patterns played by each instrument interlock with one another, creating a distinctive rhythmic complexity that characterizes the hadrah performance art. Hadrah performances are usually held during Islamic religious celebrations such as the Prophet's Birthday, Isra' Mi'raj, religious study gatherings, and other commemorations. The interlocking technique in hadrah percussion music performances shows similarities with the way traditional Indonesian percussion instruments are played. This research employs an ethnographic approach relevant for observing, analyzing, and understanding the interlocking playing technique and the function of hadrah musical instruments within the context of Islamic religious performances and rituals in Indonesia, specifically in the city of Medan. Through direct observation, the researcher aims to capture the essence of the hadrah performance art as an expression of the cultural identity of the Muslim community in the city of Medan.
