Abstract

This community service program was motivated by several educational problems identified concurrently in Jorong Buluh Kasok, Nagari Tabek, Pariangan District, namely the low achievement of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) among elementary school students due to monotonous evaluation methods, limited mastery of basic Arabic vocabulary among fourth-grade children, suboptimal habituation of Islamic value-based disciplinary character among early childhood (PAUD) students, and the persistence of behaviors with the potential to develop into bullying within the elementary school environment. This program aimed to integratively improve religious understanding, Arabic language competence, disciplinary character, and anti-bullying awareness through four complementary work programs. The implementation method employed a participatory approach, namely a point-accumulation round-based quiz for PAI evaluation and Participatory Action Research (PAR) for the other three programs, comprising problem identification, planning, socialization, action implementation, monitoring, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. The results showed consistent improvement across all programs: the average PAI evaluation score increased from 65 to 81 (+16 points); Arabic vocabulary mastery scores rose by 32% with 93% active participation; PAUD children's time discipline increased from 30% to 75%; and a Stop Bullying commitment declaration was established and signed by all students. This program demonstrates that participatory, enjoyable, Islamic value-based learning methods effectively and measurably enhance students' cognitive and affective achievements, while affirming the importance of synergy among service-learning students, schools, and parents in realizing a quality, character-based educational environment.

Abstract

The religious and moral development of elementary and junior high school students is a crucial focus in education, especially in an era marked by the rapid flow of global information. This community service activity aims to improve students' Islamic religious knowledge and interest in learning through an Islamic Quiz Competition. This activity involved students from several elementary and junior high schools. The method used was participatory action research, which included needs analysis, activity planning, competition implementation, and post-activity evaluation. The results showed a significant increase in students' understanding of basic Islamic teachings, including aqidah, fiqh, and Islamic history. The competition successfully created a joyful learning atmosphere, reduced boredom, and increased students' self-confidence and motivation to study religion. Furthermore, the activity encouraged active participation, teamwork, and healthy competition among students. Through interactive questions and collaborative challenges, students strengthened their understanding of Islamic values and their application in daily life. This activity also provided opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge and develop communication skills. This activity is expected to provide an alternative model for religious education that is enjoyable, interactive, and effective, which can be adapted by schools and educational institutions to support sustainable Islamic learning.

Abstract

Waste management and the underutilization of local resources remain challenges for rural communities and primary education in Indonesia, including in Nagari Tabek, Pariangan District, Tanah Datar Regency. This article synthesizes three community service activities conducted by students from the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar in 2026: guidance on processing banana stems and blossoms into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC); the conversion of used cooking oil into aromatherapy candles based on physics principles; and the BABAKU program (*Bambu Bakal Karya Kreatif* / Bamboo as a Basis for Creative Work), which involved training elementary school students to make bamboo piggy banks. All three activities employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, positioning community members and students as active agents of change. The synthesis reveals that abundant local materials—ranging from agricultural and household waste to natural resources—can be transformed into educational tools and useful products when supported by sustained guidance. These programs consistently fostered environmental awareness, practical skills, and a sense of ownership over the created products. The article recommends that this model of guidance based on local potential be further developed and replicated in future community service and educational initiatives.
