Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases among older adults and is a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive education in improving hypertension-related knowledge among elderly participants in Talang Putri, Palembang. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach was applied involving 54 elderly respondents. The intervention consisted of a 60-minute interactive education session covering the definition of hypertension, risk factors, prevention strategies, and disease management. Participants’ knowledge levels were measured before and after the intervention using a standardized questionnaire. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test indicated a significant improvement in knowledge (Z = –2.158; p = 0.031). Specifically, 31 participants (57.4%) showed increased knowledge, 16 participants (29.6%) experienced a decrease, and 7 participants (13.0%) showed no change. In addition, the interactive education program also empowered Posyandu cadres to independently measure blood pressure and provide health counseling. The study concludes that interactive education is effective in increasing hypertension knowledge among older adults and supports the implementation of community-based health promotion strategies
