Abstract

Sawahlunto City was a famous Coal Mining City in West Sumatera dates back from the Dutch colonial period. However, the sharp decline of its mining productivity in 2000 posed a threat to the sustainability of city life. To overcome this problem, the Government changed the direction of the development of once a dominant mining city to become a tourism city, as stated in the city’s vision on the Regional Regulation “Sawahlunto Becomes coal Mining heritage Tourism City by 2020 “. To get world recognition of its potential, the city of Sawahlunto is registered to UNESCO’s world heritage city tentative list in 2015 and continued the process for final heritage list. As part of that process, this research is dealing with how to transform the existing landscape area of the Emmahaven Port coal storage facilities as a part of an important heritage area in Sawahlunto, by applying the Outstanding Universal Value (O.U.V) of the area within its landscape design. The OUV in the form of tangible and intangible values are applied to create the place character of the industrial atmosphere by material selection, creating visual integrity and spatial character by using the Silo and the coal transportation catwalk supporting structures as points of interest, as well as providing facilities to promote cultural and social interaction.Keywords: world heritage list, UNESCO, outstanding universal value, Sawahlunto heritage city, sense of place, place character, landscape design form and space, infill design in heritage context

Abstract

Architects have a significant role in the building industry, starting from the initial plan to detailed construction and even adaptive reuse of the building. However, the safety issues related to building under an earthquake is usually going to the effort of making its integrity; thus, it commonly became the matter of engineer works and the construction process. This paper studies how actually architect plays a more significant part to deal with earthquake disaster in the complete cycles of building. The architect roles in building safety are discussed in every step in the building industry. It is clear enough that the architects are the ones mastering in every precaution related to the mitigation, from macro to micro, from start to finish, and from one to other aspects of the building. Neglecting one of those will only leave the occupants in danger.Keywords: Architect role; Building safety; Earthquake disaster mitigation.

Abstract

The aspect of expression is very important in design ideas, amidst the pressure of programming and procedural thoughts nowadays. The expression is a performance that was born from the deepening of a strong identity that makes us further involvement. Freehand drawing is believed to be an important activity that cannot be separated from an architectural design process. Freehand drawing is proven to be an effort that will increase awareness to produce creative thoughts that remain logical. The natural and organic character of a freehand drawing with its flexibility will be able to express the unique value of each design idea. It is very different when compared to the stereotypical technical line of mechanics. This paper aims to discuss the role of freehand drawing in improving the quality of expression during the design process. The discussion was carried out through a qualitative descriptive analysis based on the experience of carrying out freehand drawing courses and several freehand drawing learning and practices. The topic of the role of freehand drawing in the digital age is very strategic because it reminds us of the importance of the role of balance cognition for the design process in general.Keywords: design; expression; freehand drawing; identity.
