Abstract

This research paper aims to investigate the concept of "genius loci" in Yogyakarta, specifically in the Panembahan area of Baluwarti. With a particular focus on how the unique character of this settlement is shaped by its physical environment, historical heritage and the collective consciousness of its residents. Through an examination of tangible and intangible elements such as traditional javaneese houses (Joglo) and large white fort, embodies the historical and cultural identity of the region. This research also examines how modern economic demands have led residents to convert their homes into commercial establishments. The research employees direct observation, interviews, and literature review to assess changes in the aspects of image, space and character. The findings indicate that while some buildings retain traditional essence, others undergone significant modification, leading to potential erosion of the local cultural identity. The study aims to provide guidelines for preserving the genius loci in the face of modernization, ensuring sustainable cultural heritage.

Abstract

Buildings are constructed for a variety of different purposes according to the human activities within them. However, with the changing times, the function of buildings can become out of line with current needs. As a result, some buildings are abandoned, becoming neglected, or even damaged. Adaptive reuse can be one of the strategies to 'revive' abandoned buildings. This strategy is an important process in maintaining historic buildings because it can maintain, repair, replace, change, add to dismantle building elements while still avoiding damage to parts that have important value. This process is influenced by several factors, including the cultural integrity and architectural integrity of the building. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to understand the concept of adaptive reuse, in terms of spatial and functional adjustments based on the cultural and architectural integrity of a building. In this research, two museums, namely Lokananta and Rumah Atsiri became case studies. The research method used is the qualitative comparative method, which is to collect data based on existing data and direct observation such as documentation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results of the data from these two buildings were then analyzed by comparing the buildings before and after adaptive reuse to determine the effect of cultural and architectural integrity on changes in space and building functions.

Abstract

Traditional pesantren architecture has yet to be defined by a specific building type as it encompasses both educational and residential buildings. Many researchers explore the curriculum and its educational issues, but they often overlook the fact that all activities are closely related to where they occur. The morphology of building complexes identifies the history of buildings, including the reason for their development. This paper explores the morphology of building complexes in traditional pesantren to analyze how far the development of buildings has progressed from the old traditional pesantren since its first existence in Indonesia in general and relate it to vernacular architecture around it. A pesantren in Wajo, South Sulawesi, two pesantrens in East Kalimantan, and a pesantren in Waikabubak, East Nusa Tenggara, are the case studies used to explore the morphology. The research found that all morphologies of traditional pesantren still refer to the traditional pesantren in general. However, there are some modifications because of the needs of the pesantren's capacity and the location's natural setting. Contextualizing pesantren around the community and vernacular architecture is not the main important point for the development because recently they should prioritize santris room occupancy and more accessible building construction strategies.

Abstract

In many urban heritage contexts, adaptive reuse often prioritizes physical and economic transformation while neglecting the intangible dimensions that shape a site’s identity. The former campus of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, that now revitalized as the Jogja National Museum (JNM) and JNM Bloc, is a compelling case to examine how the spirit of place (genius loci) evolves in response to cultural, spatial, and functional shifts. This study aims to analyze the historical transformation and adaptive reuse of the ASRI campus and to explore the persistence or redefinition of its genius loci through the dimensions of image, space, and character. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (including alumni, artists, and museum managers), and archival documentation. Data were analyzed using phenomenological interpretation, focusing on the relationships between tangible heritage, community memory, and symbolic meaning. The results show that despite commercial insertions and spatial reprogramming, the site retains its identity as an arts and cultural landmark. Key findings include the role of community actors in preserving memory, the hybridization of academic and public spaces, and the use of symbolic anchors (e.g., banyan tree, monuments) to sustain continuity. This study contributes conceptually to adaptive reuse discourse by proposing an integrated framework that links spatial adaptation with cultural memory. However, the study is limited by its single-site focus and scope of informants. Future studies are encouraged to explore comparative analyses of other culturally transformed heritage sites to gain deeper insights into experiential authenticity and the construction of place identity.

Abstract

The effectiveness of evacuation route is seen from the spatial configuration that shows the relationship between several spaces resulting in a spatial organization or structure in the form of circulation movement activities and interacting with each other. Research on this spatial configuration is very important to achieve effectiveness. The creation of effectiveness is very important because it is closely related to the effectiveness of inclusive evacuation. Kali Anyar Urban Village, which is located on the island of Java, is located in Tambora District, West Jakarta. A densely populated village that has a history of quite high fire disasters. Therefore, an analysis of the effectiveness of this evacuation route is very important. This research using a space syntax analysis technique by analyzing the spatial configuration using the DepthmapX application. The purpose is to determine the effectiveness of an inclusive evacuation route in Kali Anyar Urban Village, Jakarta. The measurement results show not good connectivity value (low), not good integration value (low), and not good Intelligibility value (low). The results from the analysis of the effectiveness of this evacuation route are formulated into an inclusive evacuation route in Kali Anyar Urban Village, Jakarta.
