Abstract

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a major horticultural crop and a key carbohydrate source after rice, maize, and wheat. Its high economic value and suitability for highland cultivation make it an important commodity for food security. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of NPK fertilization frequency on the growth and yield of the Superjohn potato variety. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Sam Ratulangi University, Manado, from March to June 2025, using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with four treatment frequencies: twice, three times, four times, and five times. Each treatment received a total of 15 grams of NPK per plant, applied via watering (kocor) in divided doses. Observed variables included plant height, leaf number, branch number, tuber weight, tuber count, and tuber size classes (SS, S, M, and L). Results showed that fertilization frequency had no statistically significant effect on any of the growth or yield parameters. However, the five-time application treatment (P4) consistently yielded the highest average values numerically across most variables. High rainfall during the study period was suspected to cause nutrient leaching, particularly nitrogen, and waterlogged soil conditions that inhibited root respiration and nutrient uptake. Abstract

Growing media are one of the main components in plant cultivation, both conventional and modern, functioning as a medium for root growth and development, as well as providing nutrients, water, and air required for plant metabolism. This study aimed to determine the effect of growing media and to identify the best growing medium for the growth and yield of green mustard (Brassica juncea L.). This study was conducted in Kakaskasen Dua Village, North Tomohon District, Tomohon City, at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. The research was carried out from October to December 2025 with a single-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five growing media treatments, namely soil (M0), soil : chicken manure (1:1) (M1), soil : chicken manure : rice husk charcoal (2:2:1) (M2), soil : rice husk charcoal (1:1) (M3), and soil : chicken manure : rice husk : rice husk charcoal (1:1:1:1) (M4), each replicated five times. The observed variables included plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight of the plant. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level. The results showed that treatment M2 produced the best growth (plant height of 44.72 cm and number of leaves of 16.60) as well as the highest fresh weight yield of green mustard. Abstract

Upland water spinach (Ipomoea reptans Poir.) is a leafy vegetable with high nutritional value and rapid growth, but its productivity is strongly influenced by light intensity. Water spinach is a plant species characterized by a rapid growth rate, allowing it to be harvested approximately 25 to 30 days after sowing. Light is a crucial factor influencing the rate of photosynthesis in chlorophyll-containing plants and affecting the physiological condition of plant tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of shading levels on seed germination and yield of upland water spinach. The research was conducted from August to September 2025 in Kalasey Satu Village, Minahasa Regency, using a Randomized Block Design with four shading treatments: 0%, 30%, 60%, and 90%. Observed parameters included seed viability and vigor, as well as plant growth and yield components. The results showed that all treatments produced germination percentages above 90%, with the highest viability and vigor obtained under 30% shading. Increased shading promoted plant height but reduced the number of leaves, stem diameter, and fresh weight. The no-shading treatment resulted in the highest yield. Therefore, upland water spinach cultivation is recommended under open-field conditions or light shading up to 30% to achieve optimal growth and maximum yield.
