Abstract

Upland water spinach (Ipomoea reptans Poir.) is a leafy vegetable with high nutritional value and rapid growth, but its productivity is strongly influenced by light intensity. Water spinach is a plant species characterized by a rapid growth rate, allowing it to be harvested approximately 25 to 30 days after sowing. Light is a crucial factor influencing the rate of photosynthesis in chlorophyll-containing plants and affecting the physiological condition of plant tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of shading levels on seed germination and yield of upland water spinach. The research was conducted from August to September 2025 in Kalasey Satu Village, Minahasa Regency, using a Randomized Block Design with four shading treatments: 0%, 30%, 60%, and 90%. Observed parameters included seed viability and vigor, as well as plant growth and yield components. The results showed that all treatments produced germination percentages above 90%, with the highest viability and vigor obtained under 30% shading. Increased shading promoted plant height but reduced the number of leaves, stem diameter, and fresh weight. The no-shading treatment resulted in the highest yield. Therefore, upland water spinach cultivation is recommended under open-field conditions or light shading up to 30% to achieve optimal growth and maximum yield. Abstract

Accurate and environmentally friendly fertilization is essential to optimize the growth of vegetable crops. This study aims to examine the effects of coconut water-based Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) on the growth and yield of red amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) under different application frequencies. The experiment was conducted from February to April 2025 at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, Sam Ratulangi University, Manado. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used with four treatments: F0 (control/no LOF), F1 (LOF application once per week), F2 (twice per week), and F3 (three times per week), with each treatment receiving 250 ml per liter of water. Each treatment was replicated four times for a total of 16 experimental units and 32 plants. Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight. The results showed that application of coconut water LOF once a week (F1) significantly improved plant height, leaf number, and biomass compared to the control. However, increasing frequency beyond once a week (F2 and F3) did not lead to significant improvements, suggesting that one weekly application is sufficient and efficient. Therefore, coconut water-based LOF is recommended as an effective, eco-friendly alternative for red amaranth cultivation.
