Abstract

This study examines the use of the lecture method in science learning, focusing on the topic of substances and their changes among grade VII students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember. A qualitative case study design was applied, and data were collected through classroom observation, interviews, and student questionnaires. The results indicate that the lecture method remains useful, as structured explanations enable students to grasp fundamental concepts, distinguish between physical and chemical changes, and relate the material to real-life situations. While most students reported that lectures helped them, observations revealed issues such as boredom, lack of focus, and passive behavior when lessons were delivered for too long without variation. Teacher interviews further emphasized that lectures need to be combined with other approaches, including questioning, quizzes, and simple experiments, to create a more engaging classroom atmosphere. Students’ scores exceeding the minimum competency standard suggest that lectures can still support learning outcomes, yet their limitations lie in long-term retention and limited peer interaction. The findings highlight the importance of teacher innovation in integrating lectures with more active learning strategies to enhance the effectiveness of science education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning model implemented by the eighth-grade science teacher at SMPN 2 Jember for the topic of Work and Energy and to evaluate its effect on students’ motivation and understanding. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with the researcher as the primary instrument, supported by interview guidelines and questionnaires. The subjects were one science teacher and 39 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through structured interviews with the teacher and a 4-point Likert scale questionnaire containing six items on motivation and four items on understanding. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using frequency counts and percentages. Interviews indicated that the teacher applied a cooperative learning model to enhance collaboration, interaction, and students’ social skills. Questionnaire results showed most students had positive motivation, with 42.31% Strongly Agree (SS) and 55.98% Agree (S), while 1.71% were Disagree (TS) and 0% Strongly Disagree (STS). Understanding responses were 43.59% Agree (SS), 46.79% While (S), 8.97% Disagree (TS), and 0.64% Strongly Disagree (STS). Findings confirm that cooperative learning improves engagement, enthusiasm, and understanding. This model provides an interactive and enjoyable learning experience, encouraging students to discuss and collaborate actively. Results are valuable for teachers in designing effective strategies and as a reference for further research on learning models effects on motivation and understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of student understanding of the scientific method reporting experiment results material in grade VII B of SMPN 4 Jember. Based on data collection through observation and questionnaires, it was found that most students were able to understand the concept of reporting experimental results well. Students were able to explain the steps of the scientific method, compile experimental reports systematically, and explain the experimental results accurately. Factors supporting this include the use of interactive learning media and effective teacher guidance in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, it can be concluded that students did not experience significant difficulties in understanding the concept of reporting experimental results in the scientific method material.
