Abstract

Bacterial infections remain one of the most common health problems encountered in hospitals. Klebsiella sp. and Staphylococcus sp. are pathogenic bacteria that frequently cause infections in patients and are known to exhibit different patterns of antibiotic susceptibility. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is still used in the treatment of bacterial infections. This study aimed to compare the susceptibility of Klebsiella sp and Staphylococcus sp to chloramphenicol at Advent Hospital Bandar Lampung. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach using secondary data obtained from microbiology laboratory examination results. The sampling technique used was total sampling, involving 171 bacterial isolates consisting of 49 Klebsiella sp. isolates and 122 Staphylococcus sp. isolates. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test to determine the difference in susceptibility. The results showed that among Staphylococcus sp. isolates, 105 (86.1%) were sensitive and 17 (13.9%) were resistant to chloramphenicol, whereas among Klebsiella sp. isolates, 32 (65.3%) were sensitive and 17 (34.7%) were resistant. Bivariate analysis revealed a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference in susceptibility between Klebsiella sp. and Staphylococcus sp. to chloramphenicol. It can be concluded that Staphylococcus sp. demonstrated a higher susceptibility to chloramphenicol than Klebsiella sp., suggesting that chloramphenicol tends to be more effective against Staphylococcus sp.
