Abstract

Background: The incidence of new HIV infections continues to rise. As virus carriers, behavior of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) plays a crucial role in preventing HIV transmission. Sociodemographic characteristics are among the factors influencing individual behavior. Objective: This study examine the association between sociodemographic characteristics and attitudes and practices toward HIV/AIDS transmission prevention. Methods: An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted among HIV-positive patients at the VCT Clinic of Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital, Padang, Indonesia. Data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire from December 2023 to January 2024. Associations were analyzed using the Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test. Results: The majority of respondents demonstrated moderate attitudes (47.6%) and good preventive practices (71.4%) toward HIV/AIDS transmission prevention. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between age (p<0.05; OR=27.000) and economic status (p<0.05) with preventive attitudes. However, no significant associations were found between sociodemographic characteristics and preventive practices (p>0.05). Conclusion: Most respondents exhibited good preventive practices, their attitudes toward HIV transmission prevention were predominantly moderate. Age and economic status were significantly associated with preventive attitudes.
