Abstract

This study examines self-efficacy among drug-abuse clients undergoing strength-based therapy at Balai Pemasyarakatan (Bapas) Kelas I Semarang, in collaboration with Yayasan Cinta Kasih Bangsa (YCKB). A qualitative case-study design was used, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving eight purposively selected informants: two community counselors (Pembimbing Kemasyarakatan), three drug-abuse clients, one psychologist, and two rehabilitation counselors. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model and validated through dependability and credibility tests, including source and technique triangulation. Findings show that strength-based therapy was implemented through three continuous stages: exploring clients' inner strengths, reinforcing capacity and internal motivation, and building future orientation with relapse prevention. Across all three clients, self-efficacy improved on Bandura's (1997) three dimensions. On the level dimension, clients completed increasingly demanding recovery tasks; on the strength dimension, self-belief grew firmer despite continued exposure to old peer environments; and on the generality dimension, confidence extended to family relations, emotional regulation, and social role performance. Supporting factors included family support, trusting therapeutic relationships, mastery experiences, and peer role models, while inhibiting factors included old peer environments, social stigma, repeated past failures, and fear of relapse. The study concludes that strength-based therapy is a relevant intervention for rebuilding self-efficacy among drug-abuse clients within community-based correctional supervision, and recommends that Bapas expand strength-focused counseling as a complement to its supervisory function.
