Abstract

Teratogenic test has been performed on sweet stevia as product of B2P2TO2T cultivation at  rats (Rattus novergicus) pregnant female  Wistar. Stevia sweet was administered orally at a dose of 360, 120 and 40 mg/kg bw, volume 1 ml/100g bw per day during organogenesis period, on the day of pregnancy to the 6th until 15th. During the test, test animals were observed two times daily with the distance of six hours against the toxicity symptoms such as changes in skin, hair, eyes and mucous membranes, bleeding. Animals that experienced abortion, premature birth or death during the trial period were sacrificed and observed immediately with microscopic technic. At 20th day of pregnancy all of the pregnant rat dissected, and put out the fetuses  from the mother's and observated the health conditions in general and  the whole of mothers reproductive systems of fetuses, the outer fetal malformation and soft tissue system of fetal. The conclusion were  sweet stevia  of B2P2TO2T  no worse effect on the mother rats, fetal body weight and morphology of mother rats and the fetus, does not affect the process of development of fetal soft tissue, and does not affect the development of fetal skeleton. Generally the B2P2TO2T stevia sweet substances safe for used, does not cause teratogenic effects.

Abstract

Medicine is an important component that cannot be replaced in health service. Indonesia National Agency of Drug and Food Control conducted survey to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of communities on selecting safe and quality medicines. The aim of the study is to get description KAP of community in choosing a safe medicine. Data were collected in West Java, DKI Jakarta, and South East Sulawesi. Sampling calculation use probability proportional to size sampling and census block. There were 1271 households as samples that analysed. Data results were analysed using descriptive and index analysis. Knowledge relates to criteria of quality medicines, rules for antibiotics use, and medicines logo. Attitude relates to how to select over the counter medicines, reasons of taking traditional medicines, and opinion about giving half dose of adults medicines to children. Practice relates to source of medicines information, the way to buy prescribe medicines, and reading label information. The results showed that KAP of communities on selecting safe and quality medicines close to 50%. According to score of index analysis are 4.65 (1 to 10 scale), it is recommended that information, education, and communication has to be delivered to communities intensively and continuously by the government.

Abstract

The rhizome of Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb is intensively used in Indonesia as traditional medicine. It is widely used for hepatoprotective and anti inflammatory activities. To ensure the quality of its extract, we have studied the fingerprint or phytochemical analysis. This research was aimed to produce a chromatogram profile of the rhizome by HPTLC. The HPTLC fingerprint chromatogram of C. xanthorrhiza rhizome was performed using HPTLC plate of silica gel 60 F254 as the stationary phase and chloroform-methanol (97:3) as the mobile phase. Spot detection was carried out by TLC photo documentary system at 254 and 366 nm and TLC scanner at 427 nm. The developed method was validated according to ICH guidelines by determination of specificity and precision. We found that the specifity and precission of the method were met the acceptance criteria. In conclusion, the developed method is valid and could be used for quality control and standardization of herbal medicine containing C. xanthorrhiza rhizome.
