Abstract

School-based literacy can be fostered not only through classroom instruction but also by utilizing the physical school environment as an informal learning space. Observations at SMP Negeri 1 Secang revealed that the use of school corridors to convey educational information was suboptimal, highlighting the need for literacy resources that are easily accessible to students during their daily routines. This community service initiative aimed to transform school corridors into informal literacy spaces through the "Literasi Berjalan" program and to provide educational visual materials that encourage habitual literacy engagement among students. A service-learning approach was employed for this initiative, which was executed in four stages adapted from the ADDIE model: preparation, design and planning, implementation, and evaluation. Evaluation was conducted using a descriptive-qualitative method, involving observations of student responses and interactions, alongside the collection of feedback from both teachers and students. The initiative resulted in the creation and installation of 14 hanging information boards across various school corridors, featuring content categorized into five areas: language, numeracy, science, technology, and motivation/general knowledge. Information was presented in a concise, simple format incorporating visual elements, in accordance with Cognitive Load Theory principles. These hanging information boards provide students with independent access to educational content outside the classroom and contribute to a more information-rich school environment.
