Abstract

Low reading interest among elementary school children remains a serious problem in Indonesia, particularly in schools that do not yet have adequate library facilities. This condition was also observed at SD Negeri Sidamukti 2, Baros Subdistrict, Serang Regency, where the thematic literacy student community service program (Kuliah Kerja Mahasiswa/KKM) was conducted. This article aimed to describe the implementation of the Literacy Tree as a creative strategy used by university students to foster third-grade students' reading interest amid limited school library facilities. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach through field observations, documentation, and interviews with the classroom teacher. The observational findings indicated that the Literacy Tree served as a simple, low-cost, and accessible alternative literacy medium that encouraged students' active engagement through reading, summarizing, and displaying their work on the tree. Furthermore, the personalized and differentiated approach applied by the students helped accommodate 42 third-grade students with diverse reading proficiencies without discrimination. This program is recommended as a contextual short-term alternative that can be adapted by other schools facing similar facility constraints, alongside efforts to encourage sustainable library development by schools and local governments.
