Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain the optimized process parameters in the fabrication of a U-7Mo-xSi/Al mini plate complying with the specifications. The process flow started with synthesizing U-7Mo-xSi alloys (x = 1%, 2%, and 3%) using depleted uranium and continued to preparing U-7Mo-xSi powder, U-7Mo-xSi/Al fuel core, and U-7Mo-xSi/Al fuel element plates. The quality of the product was determined by analyses/tests including tests of raw materials and products from each end of the process by the appropriate type of test which is commonly applied to the manufacturing process of plate type fuel. The quality of U-7Mo-xSi alloy ingots, U-7Mo-xSi powder, and U-7Mo-xSi/Al fuel core was satisfactorily good and in compliance with the specifications, indicating that the applied process parameters were appropriate. The obtained fuel element plates, however, have not satisfied the requirements especially the thickness of the cladding, where there are still several measurement points whose thickness is <0.25 mm. To obtain cladding thickness according to the required specifications, it is necessary to experiment with other rolling parameters or replacing the cladding material with material of higher hardness.

Abstract

At Loss of Cooling Accident (LOCA) scenario, Zr-2 and Zr-4 as nuclear fuel cladding potentially exposed to air which experimentally leads to mechanical properties degradation faster than in steam environment. This study aims to determine the impact of nitrogen on the mechanical strength of cladding by minimizing other environmental influences. The Zr-2 and Zr-4 cladding was annealed under vacuum at a temperature of 500°C for one hour. It was followed by nitriding with the pressure of 1500 mbar for two hours. It was followed by natural cooling to room temperature. The results of tensile strength and microhardness testing showed that tensile strength, ductility and microhardness values increase of 12.1%, 19.2% and 28.2% for Zr-2 and 5.1%, 25% and 22.6% for Zr-4, respectively. Nitride layer was formed on the cladding surface due to interaction with nitrogen and there is no mechanical properties degradation due to nitriding process. It was caused by nitriding processes that were not followed or accompanied by oxidation processes.

Abstract

Several methods for separating fission product ¹³⁷Cs from uranium isotopes (²³⁸U, ²³⁵U, ²³⁶U, and ²³⁴U) in U₃Si₂/Al fuel have been widely developed. Optimization and separation were performed using the chloroplatinate precipitation to establish a new cesium (Cs) separation method. The method developed in this research offers the potential to achieve higher-purity cesium precipitates. This study aims to develop a method of separating the ¹³⁷Cs isotope from U₃Si₂/Al fuel element plates (PEB) using chloroplatinate reagents. The procedure involves dissolving the pre-irradiation U₃Si₂/Al PEB and adding several elements such as Sm, Sr, Cs, and Nd to represent the composition of pre-irradiation PEB, simulating its original condition. The cesium precipitation process in the supernatant solution was carried out by adding HCl and NaOH to separate impurities from cesium. The precipitation was conducted by adding H₂PtCl₆ to precipitate and isolate cesium from other elements. The precipitation process was optimized by varying the temperature and precipitation time. The optimum precipitation conditions were achieved at a temperature of -3°C and a time of 10 minutes, resulting in a Cs2PtCl6 precipitate weighing 0.3361 g. XRD and SEM analyses were used to complement and verify the cesium separation results using the chloroplatinate precipitation method, showing a uniform distribution of all elements. The purity of the Cs2PtCl6 precipitate obtained was 100%, with a diffractogram pattern identical to the reference.
