Abstract

Melinjo (Gnetum gnemon L.) is one of the plants which leaves can be used as antibacterial of the issuediarrhea problem because melinjo leaves contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. One ofthe caused diarrhea is bacterium Escherichia coli. The purpose of this study was to determine theactivity and effectiveness of the antibacterial ethanol extract of melinjo leaves against Escherichia colibacteria. This study included the type of experimental research was conducted in the Mikrobiologylaboratory and Farmakognosi laboratory at Academy of Pharmacy of Putra Indonesia Malang. Thisresearch used diffusion method of wells with concentrations of 10% w/v, 20% w/v, 30% w/v, 40% w/v,50% w/v, 60% w/v, 70% w/v, 80% w/v, 90% w/v, and 100% w/v. Result of the study showed that ethanolextract of melinjo leaves can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. Effective concentration ofantibacterial against Escherichia coli was 90% w/v. The conclusion of this study of melinjo leaves ofethanol extract has activity and effectiveness antibacterial to bacterium Escherichia coli

Abstract

Xhantine oxidase is an enzyme that plays a role in the formation of uric acid. Xanthine oxidase catalyzeshypoxanthine into xantin and then becomes uric acid. Bay leaf plants can lower blood uric acid levelbecause it contains secondary metabolites such as flavonoid, tannin, and essential oil. This reseachaimed are to find out xhantine oxidase inhibition by bay leaf extract. This reseach use experimentalresearch method which done in pharmacognosi of pharmacy of Putra Indonesia Malang. The reseachinclude extraction, isolation of xanthine oxidase enzyme, enzyme activity test and enzyme inhibition test.Testing of enzyme activity of xanthine oxidase inhibition using spectrophotometric at λ290 nm. Theresult showes that in variant concentrations of 5 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm, 50 ppm dan 100 ppm wereproduced inhibitions is %, 0%, 100%, 100%, 0%. Allopurinol is used as a positive control with the sameconcentration, the % inhibition is 100%, 0%, 0%, 0%, dan 100%. Based on the result, the bay leafextract with a concentration of 5 ppm has 100% inhibition equivalent to allopurinol 5 ppm.Concentration 100 ppm of bay leaf extract not show inhibitory activity.

Abstract

Candida albicans is a normal flora of the respiratory tract mucous membranes, gastrointestinal tract, and female genitalia that it causes oral ulceration, vulvovaginitis, skin infections, nail infections, lung infections and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Salam (Syzygium polyanthum) is a plant that is widely used as a food seasoning or as an herbal medicine such as antifungi. The purpose of this study is to know antifungal activity of water juice of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) on Candida albicans. This study was conducted at laboratory pharmacognosy and microbiology Academy of Pharmacy of Putra Indonesia Malang using experimental research methods. This study steps consisted of manufacture water juice of bay leaf with 100% and 50% concentration, phytochemical screening, and then tested antifungal activity for Candida albicans using method diffusion of pit. The results of this study can be concluded that water juice of bay leaf has not antifungal activity because no inhibition zone which isindicated by the absence of clear zone around well in the petri dish. Further research is needed on antifungal activity using other extract method.
