Abstract

This study was motivated by the potential psychological impacts of flash flood disasters on students, which may affect their emotional well-being, learning processes, and daily activities. It aimed to develop a counseling program based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to address psychological trauma symptoms among flash flood victims at SMA N 1 Sutera, Pesisir Selatan. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method involving 108 tenth-grade students as the population and 20 students with flash flood experiences as the purposively selected sample. Data were collected using a questionnaire assessing physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral trauma symptoms. Percentage analysis was used to describe the symptoms, while narrative analysis informed the development of the REBT-based counseling program. The findings revealed that students experienced relatively high levels of psychological trauma symptoms. Physical symptoms were categorized as high (65%), emotional symptoms as fairly high (75%), and cognitive symptoms as high (65%). These findings highlight the need for structured counseling services to address students’ psychological responses following disasters. The proposed REBT-based counseling program is expected to help school counselors support students in identifying irrational thoughts, managing emotional responses, and developing adaptive behaviors to facilitate psychological recovery and adjustment in the school environment.
