Abstract

This community outreach program aimed to introduce elementary school students to the fundamentals of user interface and user experience design and help them translate user needs into designs for educational applications. The workshop involved 32 fifth grade students aged 10–11 at SDN 1 Sukarame. Design Thinking was adapted for this age group through a participatory, project based workshop in which students identified learning problems, defined user needs, generated ideas, and built paper prototypes. The evaluation used descriptive comparisons of pretest and posttest scores and an assessment of the prototypes. The mean test score increased by 31.2 points, from 52.4 to 83.6. Interface design showed the largest gain of 39 points, while layout showed the smallest gain of 23 points. Creativity and visual appeal received the highest prototype score of 86, whereas layout and element placement received the lowest score of 65. These findings suggest that paper prototyping can introduce elementary school students to interface design and help identify where they need further guidance, particularly in organizing interface elements. The single-group design without a comparison group limited causal attribution of the score gains to the workshop.
