Abstract

The low conceptual understanding of Natural and Social Sciences among elementary school students remains a critical issue, as learning is often insufficiently connected to students’ real-life experiences and cultural environment. This study aims to examine the use of Magetan’s Sidomukti Batik as a STEAM-based learning medium to improve elementary students’ conceptual understanding of Natural and Social Sciences. This research employed a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were eight fifth-grade students at SDN Poncol 3, Magetan Regency, East Java, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a conceptual understanding test, structured observation sheets, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the mean score increased from 70.0 in the pretest to 88.5 in the posttest. Learning mastery improved from 50% to 87.5%, while the average N-Gain score was 0.58, categorized as moderate. The learning process integrated science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through dye absorption, simple tools, pattern design, motif expression, geometry, and symmetry. These findings indicate that local culture can function as cultural scaffolding for contextual, meaningful, and holistic Natural and Social Sciences learning
