Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of a digital library featuring illustrated stories with disaster mitigation content in enhancing reading literacy and environmental care among elementary students. The programme addressed the issue of a lack of individuals possessing adequate reading and writing skills, while concurrently emphasising the significance of imparting environmental education to children from an early age, a particularly salient consideration in regions such as Indonesia, where there is a high incidence of natural disasters. The present study employed a quantitative one-group pretest–posttest design, with 30 fourth-grade students (aged 9–10 years) being selected through purposive sampling. The instruments comprised a reading literacy test and a Likert-scale measure of attitudes towards environmental care. Due to non-normal distribution, data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed significant improvements in reading literacy and environmental care attitudes, with all students achieving positive ranks. There were no declines recorded, and positive effects were evident in terms of students’ enthusiasm, active participation, and ability to connect stories with real-life disaster experiences. These results show that combining digital illustrated stories with disaster mitigation content is an effective way to support literacy development, character education and environmental awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the practicality of an interactive e-module based on the Legend of Sarip Tambak Oso as a teaching material for the Indonesian language for sixth-grade elementary school students, specifically in the learning of the analysis of the intrinsic elements of fictional stories. The focus of the study lies on the level of practicality of the e-module’s use from the perspectives of both teachers and students. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of the local legend of Sarip Tambak Oso as content in the interactive e-module, which provides contextual learning based on local wisdom, a departure from typical e-modules that tend to use generic content. The method used was research and development (R&D) based on the ADDIE model. A limited practicality test was conducted with 1 teacher and 22 sixth-grade students at SDN Kalisampurno 1 using a four-point Likert scale questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods. The results showed a practicality level of 91.25% (teacher) and 87.9% (students), both falling into the “very practical” category. This indicates that the e-module is easy to use, engaging, and supports interactive learning. Furthermore, the inclusion of local legends has the potential to strengthen students’ understanding of local wisdom. Thus, this e-module demonstrated a very high level of practicality in the limited pilot test and can serve as an alternative contextual teaching material for Indonesian language instruction in elementary schools.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has increased the intensity of gadget use among elementary school students, potentially affecting their reading literacy skills. This study aims to analyze the effect of gadget use intensity on reading comprehension skills in the material of determining the main idea of fourth-grade students of SDN Lidah Wetan II Surabaya. The study used a quantitative approach with a causal associative design. The research sample consisted of 27 fourth-grade C students selected through a purposive sampling technique, while the instrument trial involved 25 fourth-grade B students. Data collection was carried out using a gadget use intensity questionnaire and a reading comprehension ability test. Data were analyzed through validity, reliability, normality, linearity, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression tests. The results showed that gadget use intensity had a negative and significant relationship with reading comprehension ability (r = -0.518; p = 0.006). The regression analysis produced a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.268, indicating that gadget use intensity contributed 26.8% to reading comprehension ability, while 73.2% was influenced by other factors. These findings indicate that the higher the intensity of gadget use, the lower students’ ability to identify the main idea of a reading. Therefore, monitoring and educational use of gadgets are necessary to support the development of students’ reading literacy.

Abstract

The low level of early reading skills among elementary school students remains a challenge in early literacy instruction. This study aims to develop the Montessori Syllable (SUKAMO) teaching material using a valid, practical, and effective Deep Learning approach to improve the early reading skills of first-grade elementary school students. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of Montessori principles with the characteristics of Deep Learning through manipulative, exploratory, collaborative, and reflective activities, thereby creating a conscious, meaningful, and enjoyable learning experience. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using a modified 4-D development model consisting of three stages: define, design, and develop. The “disseminate” stage was not implemented due to time and budget constraints. The study combined quantitative and qualitative data through expert validation, observation, interviews, questionnaires, and early reading proficiency tests. The research subjects consisted of 64 first-grade students at Al Islah Elementary School in Surabaya, divided into an experimental class and a control class, each comprising 32 students. The results showed that the SUKAMO teaching material met validity criteria based on assessments by subject matter experts, media experts, and language experts. The material was also deemed practical based on teachers’ feedback that it was highly practical, positive student responses, and students’ active engagement during lessons. The results of the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) demonstrated that the use of SUKAMO had a significant effect on students' beginning reading skills after controlling for their initial reading ability. The improvement in beginning reading skills achieved by the experimental group was greater than that of the control group, indicating that integrating Montessori-based media with the Deep Learning approach effectively enhanced students' ability to recognize letters, read syllables, and read simple words. Therefore, the SUKAMO media is considered appropriate for use in beginning reading instruction at the elementary school level and contributes to the development of Montessori-based literacy media that supports student-centered, mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning.
