Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Maternal self-efficacy is known to be a strong predictor of children’s oral hygiene behavior. Several studies have shown that the majority of children do not have good oral hygiene according to the OHI-S index, which is associated with parental concern for their oral hygiene. Mother’s self-efficacy in understanding their children’s oral  hygiene needs influences tooth brushing habits. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between maternal self-efficacy and children’s oral hygiene behavior in Aceh. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with 124 participants divided into 62 in the intervention group and 62 in the control group. The inclusion criteria were mothers with children aged 4-6 years. Maternal self-efficacy was assessed using a modified Self-Efficacy Scale for Maternal Oral care (SESMO) questionnaire. Children’s oral hygiene was measured by the Patient Hygiene Performance plaque index. Data analysis used Spearman correlation test (p<0.05). Results: This study showed that high maternal self-efficacy is associated with higher levels of maternal education (high school and college). Mothers in the intervention group predominantly reported good to moderate child oral  hygiene compared with the control group. A significant correlation was found between maternal self-efficacy and child oral  hygiene (r=0.352, p=0.001). Mothers with low self-efficacy had children with 3.10 times higher odds of having poor oral  hygiene (OR=3.10; CI=95%; 1.07-8.98). Conclusion: Children’s oral hygiene behavior was positively correlated with maternal self-efficacy. The findings of this study suggest that mothers with low self-efficacy are at risk of having children 4-6 years with poor oral hygiene. Keywords: Maternal, self-efficacy, children, oral hygiene, plaque index

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Early childhood period has a high caries risk that needs special attention from parents, especially the mothers, as their role models. Mothers’ knowledge and positive behaviour towards oral health care are essential in preventive dentistry since it is the crucial thing that can support the children’s oral hygiene. Purpose of study was aimed to analyse the relationship between the mother’s knowledge and behaviour regarding oral health with the early childhood oral health status. Methods: Type of study was a cross-sectional study with correlational research method. The material from this research were questionnaires and standard instruments for an oral examination. The study was conducted on 44 children of the early childhood period and their mothers, which was chosen as sample using a purposive sampling technique for respondents who met the inclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria were mothers who took up their children to the mother and children’s health centre, children in the early childhood period with complete deciduous teeth eruption, and willing to participate in the research. A Kendall’s-tau test was used for statistical analysis. Results: The results showed that the def-t index was 7.6 (very high) and there was a significant relationship between mother’s knowledge (p-value=0.0001) and behaviour (p-value=0.004) towards oral health status of the children (def-t index). The results also showed strong correlation coefficient to knowledge (τ = -0.643) and sufficient correlation coefficient to behaviour (τ = -0.415). Ironically, mothers with sufficient knowledge regarding the children’s oral health are not fully reflected in daily oral hygiene practice. The mean value of caries teeth in each child was seven teeth, mostly found in children with mothers with poor oral health knowledge and behaviour. Conclusion: There is a strong relationship between mother’s knowledge and oral health status of early childhood, while the mother’s behaviour and oral health status has a moderate relationship.

Abstract

Abstract

COVID-19 became a pandemic because of its high-speed transmission via salivary and airborne droplet routes. Viruses can enter host cells through ACE-2 receptors in various human organs, including the oral cavity. The oral manifestations that arise include white plaque, ulceration, burning sensation, oral mucositis, depapillation of the tongue, dry mouth, halitosis, and loss of the sense of taste. Poor oral hygiene, comorbidities, decreased immunity, and stress can exacerbate these manifestations. This review study aimed to report various oral manifestations of COVID-19 related to oral hygiene. Relevant articles were identified from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, and Google Scholar. Out of the 60 articles selected, only 36 could be reviewed. The World Health Organization recommends early detection for individuals with suspected exposure to the COVID-19 virus to control its spread, including checking for oral manifestations. Oral hygiene is an important factor affecting the manifestations of the oral cavity of COVID-19 patients, so examination of the condition of oral hygiene is recommended in the medical management of COVID-19 patients. To conclude, oral hygiene is related to the emergence of oral manifestation in COVID-19-infected patients.

Abstract

Background: Teledentistry is considered capable of detecting dental caries remotely without direct contact with patients. Deep learning (DL) algorithms are trained with sufficient datasets to find patterns and models based on learning. By using a DL model, we propose a conceptual framework for the screening of dental caries using smartphones: the DentMA application, a new breakthrough in teledentistry technology. In this study, the DentMA teledentistry application was used for mobile screening for caries. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the use of DentMA teledentistry to detect dental caries, enamel-dentin caries, and untreated caries, and to determine treatment needs in children. Methods: The participants of this study were 124 children aged 4–6 years. The study was conducted by having the participants' mothers take intraoral clinical photos of the participants using the DentMA teledentistry application on their smartphones. For the photo to be taken, each participant was directed to sit upright, with the head looking straight ahead and the mouth open. Results: The results showed that DentMA teledentistry was capable of detecting dental, enamel-dentin, and untreated caries in children, and its ability to predict dental treatment needs was good (p < 0.005). Teledentistry screening using a mobile phone can detect not only caries but also a relationship between the complaints and the medical histories of patients with dental caries. Conclusion: The DentMA teledentistry application can detect dental caries in children according to the individuals' complaints, including enamel-dentin caries and advanced caries, and can help determine treatment needs.
