Abstract

Glass waste is a non-biodegradable material that poses environmental challenges and requires sustainable management strategies. One potential approach is its utilization as a construction material in Cellular Lightweight Concrete (CLC). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of waste glass powder as a partial replacement for sand on the compressive strength of CLC and to determine the optimum substitution level. An experimental method was employed using four substitution levels of waste glass powder, namely 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of sand. The specimens were produced using Portland Composite Cement (PCC), sand, water, foaming agent, and waste glass powder passing a 200-mesh sieve. Compressive strength testing was conducted at 28 days using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) in accordance with SNI 8640:2018. The results showed that the incorporation of waste glass powder significantly affected the compressive strength of CLC. The optimum compressive strength of 5.82 MPa was achieved at a 20% substitution level, satisfying the requirements of SNI 8640:2018 for Class IIA non-structural lightweight concrete blocks. The improvement in strength was attributed to the filler effect and the pozzolanic reaction of amorphous silica in the glass powder, which promoted the formation of additional calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and enhanced the concrete microstructure. However, excessive replacement levels led to a reduction in compressive strength due to decreased mixture homogeneity. These findings indicate that waste glass powder has considerable potential as a sustainable alternative material for lightweight concrete production.
