Abstract

West Java Province is one of the largest economic contributors in Indonesia and has experienced rapid urbanization and industrialization; however, Gross Regional Domestic Product, which is aggregated by administrative unit, cannot capture the spatial distribution of economic activity. This study aimed to analyze the spatio-temporal relationship between nighttime light intensity and Gross Regional Domestic Product across the regencies and cities of West Java from 2015 to 2024. The data comprised VIIRS Day/Night Band nighttime light imagery, Gross Regional Domestic Product at current prices from Statistics Indonesia, and administrative boundaries. The analysis employed Pearson correlation, classical assumption tests, simple linear regression, time series projection up to 2035, and K-Means clustering. The results showed that Gross Regional Domestic Product increased from IDR 1,535,012 billion in 2015 to IDR 2,836,439 billion in 2024, while nighttime light intensity rose by approximately 60% and followed a strong linear trend with a coefficient of determination of 0.9569. The projection indicated that Gross Regional Domestic Product would reach approximately IDR 4,251,519 billion in 2035. The cluster analysis revealed that the centre of economic activity strengthened in the northern corridor, namely Bekasi, Karawang, Bogor, and Cirebon, together with Greater Bandung, whereas the southern region remained in lower clusters. These findings suggest that nighttime light can serve as a complementary indicator for monitoring regional economic growth and spatial inequality, and that development policies should strengthen the connectivity of southern West Java.
