Abstract

Background: The prevalence of adolescent obesity is increasing worldwide with proportions varying from country to country or between geographical regions within a country. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nutrition education with booklet media on knowledge, fast food consumption, calorie intake, and body mass index (BMI) in adolescents.Subjects and Method: This was a quasy experiment with no control group. The study was conducted in Junior high school in Medan, North Sumatera. A sample of 31 adolescents was selected by purposive sampling. The dependent variables were knowledge, fast-food consumption, calorie intake, and BMI. The independent variables were booklet media. Means of knowledge, fast food consumption, calorie intake, and BMI before and after intervention was examined by t-test.Results: Mean of knowledge after intervention (Mean= 12.90; SD= 2.71) was higher than before (Mean= 8.77; SD= 1.54) and it was statisticaly significant (p<0.001). Mean of fast food consumption after intervention (Mean= 9.48; SD= 1.38) was lower than before (Mean= 10.03; SD= 1.16) and it was statistically significant (p= 0.007). Mean of calorie intake after intervention (Mean= 2735.12; SD= 1999.9) was lower than before (Mean= 2821.09; SD= 216.13) and it was statistically significant (p= 0.003). BMI after intervention (Mean= 26.58; SD= 2.49) was equal with before intervention (Mean= 26.81; SD= 2.49).Conclusion: Nutrition education with booklet improves knowledge, reduces fast food consumption, and reduce calorie intake. Keywords: nutrition education, booklets, knowledge, fast food, calorie, body mass indexCorrespondence: Irfan Said. Abstract

Female scavengers at Terjun Landfill when working are still found who have not used a complete PPE and are still lacking in personal hygiene, this can cause health problems, one of which is complaints of skin disorders such as itching, redness, and burning. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a relationship between working period, personal hygiene, and the use of PPE with complaints of skin disorders in female scavengers at TPA Falls. This research is an analytic observational survey research with cross-sectional approach. The population and sample in this study were all 53 female scavengers carried out at the Terjun Landfill in Marelan, Medan. Analysis of the data used is a multiple linear regression test. The results showed that there was a relationship between personal hygiene (p = 0.022) and PPE use (P = 0.025) with complaints of skin disorders in female dwellers at Terjun Landfill Marelan, while there was no relationship between work expectations with complaints of skin disorders in female scavengers. The results showed the need for cross-sectoral cooperation to improve the health status of scavengers, one of which was by conducting socialization on occupational safety and health, including in terms of personal hygiene at work and the importance of using PPE for scavengers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the concentration of exposure to indoor particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), CO2, RH, and temperature and to evaluate public health complaints due to volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Sinabung. A correlation analytic was assessed with a cross sectional approach at Payung, Gurukinayan and Perbesi villages from April to July 2021. The level of particles (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), CO2, temperature and humidity were measured by the AS-LUNG type 0019 instrument, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Respondents' health complaints were evaluated by interviewing respondents using questionnaires. The Mann Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences levels of particles in the area zone. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to evaluate the effect between the concentrations of particulate matter exposure on respondents’ health complaints. The results showed that the mean concentration of exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10 in Perbesi and Gurukinayan villages was above maximum level required by Indonesia indoor air quality guideline No. 1077 while CO2 was still below the maximum level required. According bivariate test, there was a significant difference in particle concentration between three villages (p-value = 0.00) and in particle concentration between area zone (p-value = 0.00). The MANCOVA test showed that exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10, CO2, RH, and temperature has an effect on eye complaints (p-value <0.05), exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and RH (p-value <0.05) has an effect on respiratory complaints, and exposure to PM10 (p-value <0.05) has an effect on skin diseases.
