Abstract

Democracy, pluralism, Pancasila, and religious freedom become a heated debate in Indonesia because they are not only theoretical and conceptual but also have a significant influence on many aspects of the nation?s life. Moreover, the demand for the implementation of shar??ah from a small number of Muslim groups continues to echoe in this country which, off course, concern also the Christians who become the second largest population in this country. This paper is an attempt to examine the Christians? participation in democracy and Pancasila amids the demand for the implementation of shar??ah in Indonesia. It discusses theological perspectives for Christians? participation in the public space, a brief history of the struggle on shar??ah law and Pancasila, and how Christians have and should respond through civil society. The paper argues that Christians can participate in many ways in democratization and defending Pancasila in Indonesia through the channels of civil society. Keywords: Democracy, Pancasila, Shari?ah, Indonesian Christians

Abstract

Christian education (PAK) is vital in forming prospective teachers with a deep theological understanding, fostering independence, and developing critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the construction of Christian education as a foundation for developing the essential competencies of prospective PAK teachers, preparing them to face the challenges of teaching. The quantitative research approach uses data analysis and reflective analysis of Christian education, independent learning, and critical thinking. The study results indicate that Christian education, grounded in biblical values and theological reflection, encourages prospective teachers to adopt an independent learning approach that relies on internal direction rather than external guidance and to develop analytical and evaluative thinking patterns regarding various educational phenomena. Christian education also forms the character of teachers who possess integrity, are adaptable, and can effectively address educational challenges in their specific context. Thus, the construction of Christian education plays a crucial role as a foundation that not only forms the academic competencies of prospective PAK teachers but also develops the spirituality and thinking skills necessary in education.

Abstract

Religious moderation remains highly relevant in Indonesia today, as intolerance and extremism continue to emerge and affect various sectors, including higher education and students as the younger generation. Interfaith dialogue is one of the approaches widely used to promote moderation; however, such initiatives are often incidental and have limited impact in transforming individuals from intolerance to tolerance, or from social exclusivism to social pluralism. This study aims to address these weaknesses by examining the transformation process of students who actively participate in interreligious student communities. In addition, it seeks to explore and propose the strategic role of Bible/Theological Colleges (B/TC) in Indonesia in supporting religious moderation efforts. Employing a qualitative approach through interviews, direct observation of interfaith student activities, and literature review, the research finds that sustainable interfaith communities are more effective than incidental dialogues in fostering openness, tolerance, and mutual respect among students of different faiths. The findings indicate that B/TC should not limit their role to serving Christian communities but must also contribute to the common good by collaborating with Islamic Religious Higher Education institutions in establishing long-term interfaith student communities. This study contributes by offering an alternative model of interfaith engagement that strengthens the effectiveness of religious moderation initiatives in Indonesia and provides practical insights for religious higher education institutions in promoting social harmony.

Abstract

This study attempts to discuss on how religious identities contribute to or was in conflict with the emerging national identities, with focusing issue on the struggle of Islam in its relation to Indonesian identity as a multi-religious nation and Pancasila state. Based on the critical analysis from the various literature, the result of the study showed that Islam did both contribute and was in conflict with the Indonesian national identity. The Islamist fights for the Islamic state, the nationalist defends Pancasila state. As long as Islam is the majority in Indonesia and as long as there is diversity in Islam, especially in the interpretation of Islam and the state, Indonesian national identity will always be in conflict between Pancasila state and Islamic state. Even though, the role of religion in society and nation change is very significant. The Islamist is always there, although it is not always permanent in certain organizations. In the past, NU and Muhammadiyah were considered as Islamist, but today they are nationalist. At the same time, new Islamist organizations and parties emerge to continue their Islamist spirit.
