Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research was aimed to know whether scanning strategy can improve the reading comprehension ability of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Minas and to find out what factors that improve the students’ reading comprehension ability. .Twenty one eight grade students participated in this study. The data were collected from several sources; observation sheet, reading comprehension  tests, and field notes. The findings of this studyindicated that the application of using scanning strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension ability both at the cycle one and cycle two. The result of pre-test shows the average score of students reading comprehension ability was 59.4. It improved to 70.23 on the post-test 1 and 80 on the post-test 2. It was also proved that applying scanning strategy in comprehending narrative texts could improve students’ interest and motivation to read more after knowing how this strategy could help them collect the information needed from a text quickly and efficiently in the shortest period of time. Keywords: Scanning Strategy, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research data were collected on March 2017. The subjects of this research were class VIII 2 consisted of 30 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The framework of the test covered with six kinds of descriptive text and each text has five question items. The test contained 30 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that the highest score obtained by the students was in finding factual information with the mean score of 87.5 categorized into good to excellent level, and the lowest score was in finding inference with the mean score of 68 categorized into average to good level. As a conclusion, the ability of the second year students of comprehending descriptive texts was in the average to good level with the mean score of 77.4. The implication of the finding is that the students should increase their comprehension in order to reach excellent level.Keywords: Students’ ability, Descriptive texts

Abstract

Abstract: This research was descriptive analysis research. There were one variable used in this research. The variable X was the students? intonation ability in reading English story text. The subject of this research was the second semester of of English Study Program at FKIP Universitas Riau Pekanbaru, while the object of this research was Intonation Ability in Reading English Story Text. The instruments used in this research were reading story text. The population of the research was 60 students. Then, in taking the sample, the writer employed random sampling technique. To find out pronunciation ability the writer used formula through Wayan and P. P. N Arientina in Kunarsih for analyzing the data. The result of this research shows that the students in pronounciation 5 sentences got 10% category in very good level, 20% category in good level, 20% category in enough level, 40% category in less level, 10% category in fail level. Based on the analysis above, the students?intonation is in enough level, because most of the students were almost in the enough level. In conclusion, the students? ability in reading English story text of English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau is in the level of enough.Keywords: Intonation, pronunciation, short story text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the third year students of SMAN 2 Kuok in comprehending News Item texts. The research data were collected in November 2016. The subject of this research was class XII IPA which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected by giving a test to the students in the form of multiple choice tests. The test contained 40 items. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the third year students in comprehending news item texts is in good level with the mean score of 76.00. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in excellent level with the mean score of 86.00, finding the factual information in background events is in good level with the mean score of 78.00, finding the factual information in sources is in excellent level with the mean score of 80.00, in finding the meaning of vocabulary is in good level with the mean score of 69.00, in finding references is in good level with the mean score of 64.00, in finding inference is in good level with the mean score of 74.00, in finding social function is in excellent level with the mean score of 90.00. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding social function with the mean score of 90.00 which is categorized into excellent level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding reference, with the mean score of 64.00 which is categorized into good level. English teacher may develop the students’ motivation and encourage them to read news from English newspaper as a practice of comprehending news item texts in order to make the students familiar with reading materials. Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to investigate whether there is a significant effect of using Read Encode Annotate Ponder strategy on reading comprehension of narrative text of the first year students of SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi Timur Meranti. This research took place at SMAN 1 Tebing Tinggi Timur Meranti from April to june 2017. The sample was 40 students from X.2 Social that took by using cluster sampling technique. The test containing 40 items was used to collect the data. The technique of data analysis was paired sample t-test. The research findings found that there was a significant difference of students’ reading comprehension on narrative text after being taught through Read Encode Annotate Ponder strategy. Based on the data analysis, it was found that t-test (7.051)was bigger than t-table (2.023). Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to describe the level of the first year students’ ability of SMK Farmasi Ikasari Pekanbaru in identifying the use of pronouns in reading text. The design of this research is descriptive research, which has one variable to observe. This research used quantitative data, where the students were assessed by their score. To determine the sample, this research used cluster random sampling technique. The population of this research was X 1 Analisis Kesehatan in the academic year 2016/2017. The total number of population was 306 students. There were 26 students chosen as the samples of this research. The instruments of the research were 40 multiple choice questions. In collecting the data this research used written test and it had to be done in 100 minutes. All of the short stories are taken from English text book and internet. Based on the result of the research, there were 2 students (7.7%) in excellent ability level, 18 students (69.2%) who were in good ability level, 3 students (11.5%) who were in average level. Then, there were 3 students (11.5%) who were in poor level. In other words, the first year students of SMK Farmasi Ikasari Pekanbaru ability level are categorized in average level. Moreover, from the result found, the students’ ability is in average level with the mean score 64.7Key words: student, ability, pronouns, reading text

Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research is aimed to describe and to investigate whether Read, Examine, Decide, Write strategy can increase the ability of SMP Negeri 1 Gaung Anak Serka in reading comprehension ability. The participants were 30 students of the second year students SMP Negeri 1 Gaung Anak Serka. The data collection technique consisted of observation, field note, and tests. The research findings can be briefly explained as follows. First, the students reading ability could be improved by using Read, Examine, Decide, Write strategy. Before the research was done, the average score of the students reading ability was only 54.7. After the research one for cycle 1, it improved to 63.2. Cycle 2, it increased up to 70.2. Second, the students’ awareness in comprehending the texts. Read, Examine, Decide, Write strategy can improve students’ reading ability. Third, the teacher was able to apply Read, Examine, Decide, Write strategy to make the teaching process effective and it also helped students improve their reading comprehension ability and more active in learning process.Keywords: Strategy Read, Examine, Decide, Write, students improve treadingcomprehension ability. Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the ability level of first year students of English Department FKIP UR in using adjective order. This research was done to answer the research question; what is the ability level first year students of English Department FKIP UR in using adjective order. The design of this research is descriptive research which used quantitative data, where the students were assessed by their score. This research used written test as instrument which consisted of 40 questions. The population of this research is all of first year students of English Department FKIP UR in academic year 2016/2017 with the total is 120 students and there were 30 students were selected as the sample of this research by using cluster random sampling technique. The finding of this research showed that the ability level of first year students of English Department FKIP UR in using adjective order is categorized into average level with the mean score 53.1.Key Words: Ability, adjective order

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed to find out the ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program of FKIP University of Riau in using agreements. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 26 students. The study was used to find out the ability in five types of agreements such as agreements with indefinite pronoun, agreements with expression of quantity, agreements with some irregularities, agreements with nouns with no singular form, and agreements with collective noun. Cloze procedure test was used to gain the data with the number of tests is 40 questions. The result of the study revealed that the total mean score was 56 which indicated students were in average level of ability. The highest score with the mean score 67.7 was in using agreements with nouns with no singular form, it is in good level. Whereas, the lowest score with the mean score 45.6 was in using agreements with collective noun, it is in poor level.Keywords: Students’ ability, Grammar, Agreements

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this experimental research was to know the effectiveness of the Three Stage Fishbowl Decision Strategy in comprehending such a reading text as narrative texts. The subject of this research were 46 second year students of SMAN 2 Kuantan Hilir, it consisted of two classes; Experimental class and control class. In this research, the data were collected through two ways: Pre-test and Post-test. The findings showed that the application of three stage fishbowl decision strategy can affect the students in comprehending narrative texts. At the pre-test, the average score of students in experimental class and control class was 58.61 and 58.78. At the post-test, the average score of experimental class and control class was 75.13 and 61.39.It showed us that the post-test of experimental class was higher than control class. Based on the result of the research, English teacher are suggested to use three stage fishbowl decision strategy to affect the students in comprehending narrative texts.Keywords: Three Stage Fishbowl Decision Strategy, Comprehending, Narrative texts
