Abstract

  Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find students ability of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru in using question tags. This research focuses in grammar, especially for question tag in simple present tense with “be”, simple past tense with “be”, simple present tense with verb, simple past tense with verb, and modal auxiliaries.The instrument used by the writer to collect the data for this study isdrama script and full of incomplete dialogues. Try out was conducted to check validity and reliability of the test. There were 31 students as samples from XI science 1 of the second year students of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru. Based on the research finding, it can be found: first, the ability of the students in using question tags is infair ability level.Second, the students’ scores in using question tags in simple present tense with “be” is 57,5, simple past tense with “be” is 66,1 , simple present tense with verb is 57,5, simple past tense with verb is 67,1, and modal auxiliaries is 58,6. As a result,the highest score obtained by the students in identifying question tags in simple past with “verb”. It is 67,1 that falls into fair ability level, andthe lowest score that the students get is in identifying question tags in simple present tense with “verb”. It is 57,5 which falls into poor ability level.   Keywords:Ability, Using, Question tags.

Abstract

Abstract: The aimof this research was to know whether or not Think-Pair-Share technique could improve students’ ability in writing recount texts and how it could improve the ability. Classroom action research was conducted in two cycles to 34 students of X-2Class of SMAN 03 Pekanbaru as the participant of this research. The data were collected through written test, observation sheet, and field note. This research findings found that Think-Pair-Share technique could improve the students’ ability in writing recount texts. Students’ mean score improved from 54.46 in pre-test to 65.14 in post-test 1, and to 77.64 in post-test 2. It is in line with the activeness of students that improved from 46.08% in cycle 1 to 86.26% in cycle 2. Think-Pair-Share technique helped students in writing the recount texts. It analyzes each part of generic structure of recount text. Think-Pair-Share strategy could motivate the students during teaching and learning process. This research recommended that teachers to use Think-Pair-Share to find out the different effect after using this cooperative learning technique than a conventional technique. Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to improve the speaking ability of the first year students by using Digital Storytelling-Photostory Computer Application in comprehending the descriptive texts. This is an experimental research with one pre-post test design. The population of the research is the first year students of SMK Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru with 21 samples. To collect the data, the writer administered the pre test, treatments, and the post test at end of the session. In analyzing the data, the t- test formula was used to determine whether the technique applied can significantly increase the students’ speaking ability. From the data collected, it can be seen that the average score of pre test is 64.6. Upon the implementation of digital storytelling, there is a significant increase on students’ scores. It can be seen from the result of post-test. The average score of the post-test is 76.8. The score also reveals that the students have achieved the minimum mastery criteria required by the school. To sum up, digital storytelling-photostory computer application has significantly increase the speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Darel Hikmah Pekanbaru. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the third year students’ ability of English Study Program in writing sequence of events of Yes Man movie. This research focus on the accuracy in grammar, vocabulary mastery, the mechanics, arrange the form and style and ease of communication (fluency) based on the movie. Data were collected using writing test, particularly writing the sequence of events the movie. The research finding are as follows: firstly, the ability of the students based on three raters in writing plot of movie is 70.37 which is in Average to Good level. Second, the students’ average score based on three raters for Grammar aspect is 3.49, the average score for Mechanics is 3.54, in Vocabulary aspect the average score is 3.66, the students’ average score for Form is 3.31 and the last average score is Fluency, which is 3.39. The highest score obtained by the students is in Vocabulary aspect and the lowest score is in Form aspect.Keywords: Ability, Writing, Sequence of Events of Movie

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental design aimed to find out the effect of mind mapping technique in writing descriptive texts. This pre-experimental research was used one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample of this research was the first year students of SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru. The partcipants were 39 students. The reasons for conducting this research because of several problems: the students faced some problem in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Furthermore, the students have difficulties to develop their ideas in writing descriptive text. The steps of research procedure are conducting pre-test, treatment, post-test and data analysis. The data were assessed by the three raters and analyzed by using t-test formula. The data analysis showed that the implementation of mind mapping technique as the teaching technique was effective to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive texts. The finding also proved that in the pre-test students’ average score was only 58.72 and it improved to 76.07 in the post-test. In addition, applying mind mapping as a teaching technique in English language teaching and learning could also improve students’ ability to write English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, organization, and fluency.Keywords: Mind Mapping Technique, Ability, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

AbstractTo enable the students of junior and senior high schools in Indonesia to write such short functional texts as announcement, message, advertisement, brochure, and letters; and such genres as narrative, recount, news item, report, descriptive, explanation, procedure, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, discussion, is the main target of the teaching of writing skill (Curriculum 2004, 2006, and 2013). To reach this target, of course, teachers should teach all theoretical concepts related to these kinds of texts and ask students to write. However, teachers prefer to give only the examples of each short functional texts and genres; and in the real classroom evaluation, students are required to answer a multiple-choice question that is similar to reading comprehension. This condition also happens in the school-leaving exams and national exam. Consequently, students got difficulties to write a grammatical and well-organized genres as well as short functional texts; even the teachers will have no experiences at all on how to construct a fit, proper, and feasible rubric for those texts. This is due to fact that more than 50% of new students (i.e. freshmen) of English Department Faculty of Education and Teacher Training University of Riau Pekanbaru have moderate to low levels ability in writing skill, particularly in terms of genres, short functional texts including essays or projects (Results of Writing Course I, Academic Year 2014/2015). In relation to this, about most English teachers of Province of Riau attending Education & Training of Certification (18-27 October 2015) said that they had difficulties to construct rubrics for a specific short functional text. This paper will try to disclose how to construct and apply rubrics for those texts that will be a new challenging task for English language teachers within Riau Province and Indonesia.Key words: constructing, rubrics, genres, short functional texts

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research was to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the reading ability of the first year students of MTsN 3 Bengkalis in descriptive texts.This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group conducting of 25 students was selected through cluster random sampling as the sample of the research. This research used reading test consisted of 40 items.Research findings should that, the mean score of pre-test was 58.20 and the mean score of post-test was 68.80. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.228) is higher than t-table (2.064) at the significance level 5%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Hence, there is a significant effect of jigsaw technique on the reading ability of the first year students of MTsN 3 Bengkalis in descriptive text.Key Words: Effect, Jigsaw Technique, Reading Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to find out the effect of Paired-Story-Telling technique on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMP N 8 pekanbaru. This study was an experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The population of this research was the second year students of SMP N 8 pekanbaru. In this research, a single group was selected to be a sample by using cluster random sampling. The sample that has been choosen was class VIII.8 consisting of 39 students. a speakingl test was used to get the score of the students before and after taught by using Paired-Story-Telling technique. After all the data were collected, the writer calculated and analyzed them by using Microsoft excel 2010 and T-test formula. It was found that t-test score was 13.30 while t-table was 2.024. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Paired-Story-Telling technique on the students’ speaking ability of the second year students of SMP N 8 Pekanbaru that can be seen from the t-test result and the improvement of the students’ scores in post-test.Keywords: Junior high school students,Speaking ability, Paired-Story-Telling technnique

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out whether there is an effect of Round Table Technique on the students’ writing ability in recount text of SMPN 1 Kubu. This research was applied by using one-group-pretest-posttest design. In conducting this research, a single group was selected to be a sample by using Cluster Random Sampling. There are 33 students as the sample. In order to know the difference between the pre-test and the post-test and to analyse the hypothesis, t-test formula was used. After analysing the data, the writer found that t-obs score was 11.738 while the value of t-table is 2.037. Since t-obs (11.738) was higher than t-table (2.037), it can be concluded that null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there is a significant effect of Round Table Technique on the students’ writing ability at SMPN 1 Kubu in writing recount text. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that teachers use Round Table Technique to help the students to generate their ideas in writing a recount text.Key Words: Effect, Round Table Technique, Writing Ability, Recount Text
