The Pearson Product-Moment formula, processed via SPSS, revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.714, indicating a high correlation. The null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, confirming a significant relationship between the two variables. These findings underscore that there is a high correlation between listening habits to English songs and vocabulary mastery of the first year English Study Program students of FKIP Universitas Riau.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and interpret various forms of slang and idioms that appear in film dialogue, as well as analyze their function and meaning in narrative and social contexts. The methodology used in this research is qualitative analysis with a descriptive approach. Dialogue in films is analyzed to identify examples of slang and idioms, which are then categorized by type, such as binomials, idiomatic phrases with verbs, and similes. In addition, the context of use of each expression is analyzed to understand how they contribute to the characterization and development of the plot. The research results show that the use of slang and idioms in "The Shawshank Redemption" not only enriches the dialogue and provides authenticity to the characters, but also reflects the social dynamics and hierarchy in the prison environment. Slang is used as a tool of secret communication between prisoners, while idioms help express the characters' emotions and experiences in a more lively and expressive way. In conclusion, this analysis reveals that the slang and idioms in "The Shawshank Redemption" have an important role in shaping the narrative and deepening the audience's understanding of the characters and their social context. This research contributes to the study of language in film media and enriches understanding of informal language use in certain cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to identify, analyze, and discuss the translation techniques used in the subtitle of an animated movie, as well as the phenomena found during the research process. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative analysis with a descriptive approach, but a simple quantitative approach is applied to find out the most dominant techniques. The utterances of two main characters in the film are collected, which are then categorized by type according to the theory proposed by Molina and Albir. These utterances are then analyzed and described accordingly. The research findings show that there are 13 out of 18 techniques used in the subtitle, with literal translation (146 data) as the most dominant technique. This result is in line with previous studies on the similar topic, which also have literal translation as the most dominant technique used. In summary, it can be said that there are only a few translation techniques that are actually suitable in translating movie subtitles. As the implication of this study, this research contributes to the study of language in film media and knowledge enrichment for those who are interested in translation techniques.
