Abstract

There is consideration by most parents in giving proper names for their childrensuch as for expectation or praying. They use language varieties in supportingtheir expectations. This study Psychosociosemantically aims to elaborate propernames of IAIN (The State Islamic Institute) Surakarta. The problems of this studyare how are Psychosociosemantically the comprehension and reasons of givingthe proper names? And how are the formation of proper names? The method is a descriptive qualitative study. The writer conducts some descriptions in collecting the data, analyzing the data and getting some conclusions. The result of thestudy informs that in creating the proper names especially for students of IAINSurakarta, there is certain expectation and reason. Proper name is adopted fromthe name of certain people or character and created from certain event. Besides, itis also created from certain time (temporal) and certain place (spatial). The writerconcludes also that proper names are inspired from literary works title (especiallysongs title), kinds of profession, birth sequence, certain word formation, andfamily names. The forming of IAIN Students’ proper name is based on many ways,such as: formed from parents name combination, formed from father’s name,formed from mother’s name and formed from specific acronym.

Abstract

This research explains about the mixed code that occurs in complex society especially for daily conversation of young women. The purpose of this study is to get a description of the mixed code in the magazine Kawanku, which is to get an idea of how and what factors mix the Indonesian slang code that appears in my magazine. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The findings of the research are the use of foreign languages by Indonesians and they prefer to use non-standard language instead of standard language. The author gets several factors that influence the interference of the code. It is important for Indonesian teenagers to use standard Indonesian when they communicate with each other to preserve their language. This study also aims to make the language study institutions make Indonesian terms in its policy.

Abstract

Artificial intelligent-based application helps people in many ways, one of which telling them jokes. This study aims at (1) investigating the types of jokes on Google Assistant application, and (2) describing linguistic aspects used in the jokes. There were several steps in conducting this study. Firstly, the data of this study were the jokes taken from “tell me a joke” feature on Google Assistant. As many as 58 jokes were collected as the data. Then, the data were coded and analysed based on its linguistic aspects in terms of sounds, meanings, and word formations. After all data were analysed, conclusions were drawn. There are two forms of jokes in this application namely riddle and one liner. In riddle, the jokes are presented in question-answer form, whereas one liner joke only consists of one or two sentences. There are several linguistic aspects in creating the jokes, namely homonyms, minimal pair, substitution of sounds, onomatopoeia, phrase and words with similar pronunciation, idiomatic phrase, addition of sound and word combination. Among those aspects, homonyms are the most frequently utilized in the jokes. Jokes are beneficial for language learners to learn the real use of the language, thus further studies on jokes are suggested.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the realization of derivational affixes in eleventh-grade students’ writing assignments in the specialization class, which is literature class at State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Karanganyar. Plag, Carstairs and McCarthy, and Haspelmath and Sims were the theories used in this research. These theories are related to the characteristics of derivational affixes, the kinds of word class changes in derivational affixes, and the categories of derivational affixes. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with the document analysis technique to gather data from eleventh-grade students’ writings.  The researcher found 285 words formed through the derivational affixes process. While derivational infixes were not found in the study, the findings show that derivational suffixes are more widely used than derivational prefixes. In short, students applied derivational affixes grammatically correctly in their writings.

Abstract

This study elaborates the utterances spoken by Tsunami's Victim in Central Celebes. It focuses on the exclamatory speech acts. There are kinds of utterances cried by victim especially video or audio taker when the tsunami occurred in the end of September 2018. The disaster destroys the city of Palu, Donggala regency, Parigi Moutong Regency, and Mamuju Utara Regency of Central Celebes. This study is expected to get the kind of Illocutionary Speech Acts especially illocutionary acts forces and the function of those. The kinds of illocutionary acts frequently appeared are expressive and declarative. The function of the illocutionary acts in a panic circumstance are informing, commanding, asking, requesting, shouting, wishing, expecting, complimenting as well as blaming.
