Abstract

This research aims to find out how the understanding of religious moderation and what issues arise related to religious moderation policies among UIN Suska Riau lecturers. Data were obtained through survey, FGD, and documentation, with several lecturers who are considered to represent the scientific disciplines of Da'wah, Education, Economics, Ushuluddin, and Psychology. The results showed; First, that in general, UIN Suska lecturers have a fairly good national commitment. The same applies to tolerance. They are even willing to be friends with people of different religions; and at UIN Suska Riau, lecturers generally reject all things related to violence. Second, a number of important issues emerged during this research. Although the majority of UIN Suska Riau lecturers view the importance of moderate religious attitudes, there are still those who consider that religious moderation is part of the weakening of Islamic teachings, and there are also those who understand religious moderation as another face of Islam Nusantara. Another issue that arises is that religious moderation is considered an effort to reduce loyalty to one's religion. Religious moderation is considered a process of ignoring religious approaches that are based on text, so that it tends to favor context.

Abstract

Currently, the Muslim community in Indonesia is experiencing a 'conservative turn.' Several radical group movements seem to be expanding their roles in various dimensions of community life, including education. Many surveys corroborate this condition. The symptoms of intolerance have also entered the activities at Ma’had Al-Jamiah UIN Suska Riau, an "elite" institution that provides a space for learning about religious values. Through the Living Values Education (LVE) approach, teachers are trained in the values of religious moderation for students of Ma’had Al-Jamiah UIN Suska Riau. This research uses the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. Twenty students were randomly selected and provided with understanding through the Living Values Education (LVE) approach. The research results indicated an increase in students' understanding of moderate religion after being educated in living values. These findings are useful for policymakers to implement this study model in promoting religious moderation among the Muslim community.

Abstract

Islam and Islamic culture are frequently discussed and debated around the world. These discussions have often been linked to immigration in general and assimilation and integration policies, and thus to the coexistence of different religious and ethnic groups, and to the practice of racism and racial segregation in particular. These issues have now become visible in cultural, religious and migration studies, as well as in studies of race relations and socio-economic inequalities. For example, people inside and outside academia question Islamic politics, the place of democracy and human rights in Islam, and most importantly, whether Islam can coexist with other (i.e. Western) cultures. Against this background, it is important to understand the Islamic cultural system, Islamic society and politics, including democracy, in Islam, Muslim views on migration and some other phenomena related to Islam. The article will discuss the norms and values of Islam in relation to current issues and the search for the place of political Islam, democracy in Islam and whether Islam can coexist with other cultures.

Abstract

This article investigates the instrumentalization of Islam as a populist currency in Indonesia’s contemporary political landscape. Through a critical discourse analysis of the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election and the 2019 presidential campaign, the study examines how political and religious actors mobilize Islamic narratives, symbols, and emotional appeals to construct the moral superiority of “the people” and delegitimize their opponents. It argues that Islam functions not merely as a system of belief, but as symbolic capital—used strategically to moralize authority, forge collective identity, and exclude ideological and religious “others.” The findings reveal how religious populism in Indonesia has contributed to the erosion of pluralist values and the consolidation of exclusionary politics. The article offers a conceptual proposition of “Islam as populist currency” to understand this phenomenon, and reflects on its implications for democracy, tolerance, and civil society in the world’s largest Muslim-majority democracy.

Abstract

This article explores the internal dynamics of the Tablighi Jamaat in Southeast Asia through an anthropological approach to religion. As a transnational da'wah movement originating from colonial India, the Tablighi Jamaat promotes a particular form of piety that interacts with, is negotiated, and at times contested within the local socio-cultural contexts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Drawing on the theories of locality (Appadurai), piety as a social construct (Asad & Mahmood), and symbolic capital (Bourdieu), the article highlights how language, travel experiences (safar), ethnicity, and gender serve as key arenas in the formation of hierarchy and authority within the movement. Through a critical reading of language adaptation, cultural resistance, and shifts in proselytizing practices by youth and converts, this study argues that piety within the Tablighi Jamaat is not a fixed entity, but rather the result of ongoing negotiations between global values and local realities. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of transnational Islam as a project shaped by locality, conflict, and social transformation.

Abstract

The concept of divinity is a fundamental aspect of all human belief systems. For Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the existence of God is the first and highest truth, undeniable by reason or human nature. This study aims to analyze al-Qaradawi's arguments regarding the existence of God and examine their relevance within contemporary theological thought. Employing a qualitative approach with a figure study method (library research), the primary data source is Yusuf al-Qaradawi's work Wujudullah: Eksensian Allah (Risalah Gusti, 2005). The study identifies five main arguments for the existence of God: (1) the argument from nature, (2) the cosmological argument, (3) the argument from precise and accurate measurements, (4) the argument from guidance and direction, and (5) the argument from the history of salvation. All these arguments emphasize that the existence of God is real and inherent in human consciousness, whether directly or indirectly realized. These findings demonstrate that al-Qaradawi successfully integrates theological, philosophical, and empirical approaches to explain the existence of God amid the challenges of modern thought.
