Abstract

The purposes of the study are to explain students’ and teachers’ experience in dealing with the inhibit aspects of English teaching-learning process. This study is used the qualitative approach and the case study as the design of the study. The participants of the study were 26 students and 3 teachers of SMA Negeri Benlutu, So'e. The results of the study shown that the inhibition aspects such as rural environment, lack of learning resources makes the students left behind in English education background. As well as the local cultural factor, it is also affects the students to use the local language more often than using English in class activity. Besides that, students’ negative attitudes also cause the students unmotivated in class. The results concluded that schools and governments should review their policies in applying English learning in a rural school environment. It is expected that teachers and students can get the solution to avoid the factors that inhibiting the effectiveness of learning English in the classroom

Abstract

The existence of development in the education field requires teachers to be able to act more than just a teacher who knows how to teach. To become an advanced teacher, a teacher should have good professional competence and pedagogical competence. However, there are still problems that hinder the teacher when conducted the teaching and learning process. The problems that appear in the English classroom are teachers’ professional competence and teachers’ pedagogical competence.            This study aims to describe and explain teachers’ experience in dealing with their professional and pedagogical competence in teaching the English language. This is a qualitative study and used interview and observation as the instruments to collect the data from 3 teachers as the participant in SMA NegeriBenlutuSo’e - East Nusa Tenggara.            The results of the study found that teachers’ low professional and pedagogical competence caused the teachers to have inadequate English teaching competence in teaching. It caused the teachers to teach the students with inappropriate learning materials, monotonous learning activities, and uncooperative assessment methods. The results of this study also recommend that teachers have high English language proficiency and teaching competence to be able to teach English in Senior High School.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out students’ strategies to improve vocabularies size in Critical Reading class of second semester students at English Education Program of STKIP SoE. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. There were 21 students involved as the research participants and willing to be interviewed. The result of this research showed that students applied strategies, such as listening to the songs, watching movie, reading, and listing difficult words to improve their vocabularies. By applying those four strategies, students were able to understand vocabularies in context without any assistantship, understand the words in foreign language, repeat the words several times, describe the conversation in mother tongue, pick some words when reading books, remember the words that they get, and write down some difficult words.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the students’ vocabulary mastery improvement after the implementation of a short English movie in Interpretive Listening class. There were 15 students of Interpretive Listening class of STKIP SoE as the participants. The researcher used Classroom Action Research as the method and collected the data by using test, in the form of pretest, posttest and observation for the students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of the study indicated that short English Movie can improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The improvement covered, the students’ being active in the process of teaching and learning in the classroom.

Abstract

Our education world is facing a very different situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic where these last few years, teaching and learning activities must be done online. However, the implementation of English online learning in remote areas did not go well due to the lack of teachers' and students’ ability in using technology in learning English during and post the pandemic. Therefore, the study was conducted to see how the correlation between the teachers’ competence, students' attitude, and the rural environment in affecting the use of technology in the English teaching and learning process during and post-pandemic. In this study, interview and observation were conducted to collect the data. The result of the study showed that there were some correlations between the rural environment, students’ attitudes, and teachers’ competence in facing the technology challenges in learning the English process during and post the pandemic. Teachers and students were difficult to adjust with the use of technology due to limited facilities in a rural area, lack of skill in using the technology, and negative attitudes that decrease students' motivation in learning English during the pandemic. However, improvement was also found in the post-pandemic, where the students and teachers could improve their competence in using technology media in learning English. The result showed that the students showed high motivation when the teacher delivered material and gave assignments using technology. Furthermore, teachers are also able to improve their teaching competence in creating teaching media based on technology use in the post-pandemic.

Abstract

The aim of this community service activity is to enhance the scientific literacy skills of lower-grade students in Kesetnana village through educational game-based lessons. The activity is conducted in several stages, including planning, preparation, implementation, evaluation, and reporting. The outcome of this initiative is the development of educational game media and its utilization in the teaching process, resulting in a significant increase in scientific literacy skills of over 65%. Additionally, students' interest in learning has risen by 68.8% according to indicators of learning motivation, demonstrating their positive response to the educational game-based approach. Therefore, efforts to promote scientific literacy among lower-grade elementary school students in Kesetnana village can be effectively carried out through regular lesson activities over a three-week period, leading to improved scientific literacy skills and increased learning motivation.
