Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to describe the religious understanding of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) students in Gorontalo obtained from online media. It was also conducted to determine the school's response in harmonizing religious understanding. This study aims to answer the following questions: (1) How is the religious understanding of Madrasah Aliyah students obtained through online media? and (2) How do the schools respond and harmonize the religious understanding of students who interact with online religious sites? Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documents study, by targeting Madrasah Aliyah students, teachers, religious leaders, academics, and community leaders. The results showed that MA students use online media as sources of learning materials and religious content with the duration of accessing online media reaching 4 to 10 hours per day. It has influenced the understanding, attitudes, and religious practices of MA students. The understanding and practice of "exclusive" religion have become widespread, among students no longer celebrating the Prophet's birthday (mawlid), barzanji, tahlil, prohibiting to wish someone Merry Christmas, forbidding music, forbidding to take self pictures, and considering the traditions of the Gorontalo people which aren't following Islamic values as heretical and forbidden. As a response to dealing with the problems above, the school tries to align students' religious understanding by strengthening religious moderation for teachers and students, building communication with students in social media, and providing mentors for students. This study recommends: (1) the importance of strengthening the understanding of religious moderation to teachers and students, (2) encourage religious institutions such as NU and Muhammadiyah to use online media as a da'wah tool, and use language that easy to understand by the millennial generation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study intends to explore the socio-cultural construction of island communities in South Sulawesi that fosters the tradition of bunting lolo (child marriage), including the influencing factors and its dialectic with the state and Islamic law. A critical ethnographic method was adopted with the island communities as the research subject, while the culture and practice of bunting lolo constitute the units of analysis. Data were collected from the communities of Kodingareng (Makassar City) and Badi (Pangkajene Islands Regency) island, both part of the Spermonde Islands. The result showed that the practice of bunting lolo has become a tradition based on social, cultural, economic, and religious constructs. In the contemporary context, bunting lolo is a solution to 'balerek' or promiscuity among adolescents, both boys and girls. This practice conflicts with the minimum marriage age regulation of 19 years stated in Marriage Law No. 16 of 2019. Consequently, bunting lolo manifests the dialectic between state, Islamic law, and local culture in marriage practices within the island communities in which state regulation is found to be less considered than the other two.

Abstract

This article delves into the resurgence of a banned group, Gafatar, in Palopo City. The group was officially banned by the government in 2016. The resurgence of this movement was known to the public when a video featuring the pledge of allegiance or baiat by three religious college students in Palopo City on November 9, 2020, went viral. The research employed a fact-finding method to uncover the details and underlying issues surrounding this pledge of allegiance. The research primarily focuses on establishing the timeline of events related to the pledge and identifying the religious group responsible for the incident. This study found the involvement of the ex-Gafatar group in the video, as the figures have beliefs and teachings similar to those of the group. This indicates that, despite being banned, the Gafatar group remains active in disseminating its beliefs and recruiting new members. The resurgence of Gafatar's activities poses a significant risk of triggering socio-religious issues within society, necessitating swift responses from relevant authorities.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the centralization and decentralization of the zakat management system at Lontara Sukku'na Wajo.. The research method used in this article is based on the Lontara’ Sukkuna Wajo (LSW) manuscript as the primary data source. This manuscript describes religious practices, especially zakat management system in the past. The data were studied using a philological approach through these methods: transliteration, translation, and interpretation of text and context related to zakat, then relating them to the present. This research found that there are relevances between LSW manuscripts and religious practices that developed in the community in the past and present, especially regarding the centralization and decentralization of zakat management. The centralization system of zakat management in LSW is marked by the absence of Friday prayers in the area and the incompleteness of Sara’ officials so the zakat management system must be centralized and follow the areas with complete Sara’ equipment, so they must pay their zakat in the Wajo Kingdom.  Meanwhile, the decentralization system of zakat management can be implemented if the community order in the region is complete, marked by the holding of Friday prayers and complete Paréwa Sara’ (officials in charge of handling religious matters). The Paréwa Sara’ consists of Kali, Katte’, Amele’ (or an amil), Pangulu Limpo, and Bilala. Friday prayers and the completion of the Paréwa Sara’ became a measure in establishing a legal product at that time. A well-established region was considered capable of managing itself. If it is manifested in the present condition, then zakat management institutions or organizations that have been accredited in their fields are considered capable of managing their own zakat assets under their authority.
