Abstract

Background: Excessive pain in labor leads to the side effects on the maternal and neonatal health. Many strategies for labor pain management have been studied, including complementary therapies, yet the comparison of the effectiveness among them needs to be explored more. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of complementary therapies to reduce pain in the first stage of labor. Methods: This was a literature review using electronic databases from Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCOhost and text books. The keywords of searching literature were ?complementary therapy?, ?pain?, and ?first stage labor?. All articles reviewed in this study were written in English and Indonesian language with the published year 2010 until 2018.Results: In total, there were 44 out of 232 publications included in this study. Complementary therapies that can be used to reduce first-stage labor pain were aromatherapy, acupressure, and hypnotherapy. Using lavender aromatherapy, pressing the point of L14, SP6, BL32 as well as the use of hypnobirthing showed significant influence in reducing the pain at the first stage of labor among pregnant women. Conclusion: Acupressure is more effective in reducing the pain at the first stage of labor than other alternative techniques. In order to effectively manage the pain at the first stage of labor, a combination of complementary therapies and pharmacological treatment is needed.

Abstract

Adolescence is a golden period with optimal growth and development. At this time, teenagers have very important physical and psychological needs. Moreover, if there is malnutrition, one of the problems is anemia. Anemia is a global public health problem that affects adolescent girls, women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and children in developed and developing countries. This study aims to analyze the correlation between inhibitor and enhancer consumption and anemia in adolescent girls. This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Semarang City. Early adolescents ages 10 – 15 years old, and fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected using a questionnaire. Consumption of inhibitors and enhancers of iron was measured using a semi-qualitative food frequency questionnaire. Anemia status was measured using a digital hemoglobin meter device. The Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test were used to analyze the research data. The result of this study shows there is no significant correlation between the consumption of inhibitors and enhancers of iron toward anemia status among adolescent girls with p-values 0.158 and 0.744 α (CI:95%) respectively. Adolescents should be concerned about what they consume, and information about what food can enhance and obstruct iron should be socialized so they can wiser to reduce consuming inhibitors and increase consumption enhancers of iron.

Abstract

Menarche marks the beginning of puberty for girls and requires adequate knowledge for proper preparation. A preliminary study revealed that all 11 students had misconceptions about menarche, highlighting the need for effective health education. This research evaluates the effectiveness of a matching game in increasing menarche knowledge among female adolescents at SD Kristen 03 Salatiga using a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pre-test post-test control group, where the control group received a leaflet. The sample included 42 participants from classes V and VI, with data collected by questionnaire and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses, specifically Wilcoxon statistical tests (p<0.05) and independent t-tests. The majority of respondents were 11 years old (76.2%) and 12 years old (23.8%). Menarche knowledge scores significantly increased from 62.86 to 94.05 after the matching game intervention and from 63.33 to 93.81 after the leaflet control group, both with p-values of 0.000, indicating that both interventions effectively improved knowledge. Mathematically, the score increase in the matching game group was 0.71 points higher than in the leaflet group. Although not statistically significant (p = 0.731), the 2.33% higher effectiveness of the matching game suggests its potential as a more engaging educational tool. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of matching games in adolescent reproductive health education and suggests future research to develop digital matching games to increase engagement.

Abstract

The development of essential oil extraction techniques has seen significant advancements with the introduction of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) technology. UAE is known for its ability to accelerate chemical processes and improve the efficiency of essential oil extraction. However, to achieve optimal extraction quality and yield, precise control over various process parameters is required. This study focuses on enhancing the UAE extraction process by integrating modified features, including a temperature sensor, speed sensor, frequency regulator, temperature controller, stirrer, and cooler, into the extraction apparatus. Objective of this research is to develop a UAE-based extraction apparatus with advanced features that optimize the pre-treatment extraction process of essential oils. The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach to design and develop the UAE-based extraction apparatus. The apparatus is then tested to evaluate its performance in optimizing the extraction process. Experimental trials are conducted to assess the impact of each feature on the efficiency and quality of the extracted essential oils. The integration of the temperature sensor, speed sensor, frequency regulator, temperature controller, stirrer, and cooler allowed for better control over the extraction conditions, leading to higher yield and improved quality of the essential oils. The apparatus demonstrated its ability to consistently produce essential oils with higher purity and active ingredient concentrations compared to conventional methods. In conclusion, the development of the modified UAE-based extraction apparatus proves to be an effective solution for optimizing the essential oil extraction process

Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which children experience delayed growth and development due to poor nutrition, recurrent infections, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. The prevalence of children under 5 affected by stunting in 2020 is 22.3% or 148.1 million children worldwide. The analytical case-control study was conducted to explore the prevalence of child stunting and determine the association between birth weight and stunting occurrence among children under 5 years. It shows statistically significant with a p-value of 0.009 (p-value < 0.05). A history of birth weight <2500 gr babies have a 3,660 times greater risk of experiencing stunting compared to children under 5 who were born with birth weight ≥2500 gr (CI=95%). There was a significant association between birth weight and stunting incidence among children under 5 years.

Abstract

Anemia in adolescent girls is a global public health issue that affects nutritional status and future reproductive outcomes. Adolescents with anemia are at higher risk of delivering stunted offspring, making anemia prevention essential in breaking the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with anemia among adolescent girls as an effort to prevent stunting. This cross-sectional study was conducted at SMPTQ Pangeran Diponegoro, Semarang, from August to December 2023. A total of 92 female students aged 10–15 years who met the inclusion criteria were selected using total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and physical measurements, including hemoglobin levels, BMI, MUAC, and dietary intake. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests (α = 0.05). The prevalence of anemia was 25%. Menstrual duration was significantly related to anemia (p = 0.041; RR = 2.188). Other factors (BMI, MUAC, breakfast habits) were not significant. Menstrual duration was significantly associated with anemia among adolescent girls. School-based anemia screening and nutrition education are recommended to prevent anemia and future stunting.
