Abstract

The demand for English-proficient nurses in global healthcare settings has led to the development of multiple Nursing-English learning platforms. However, the user experience (UX) of these platforms significantly impacts their effectiveness in language learning. This study aims to evaluate the UX of several Nursing-English platforms using two established usability measurement tools: the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ). The primary objective is to uncover usability strengths and weaknesses across different platforms to improve the learning experience for nursing students. The research adopts a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection. A total of 109 nursing students from various universities in Sumatra, Indonesia, participated in this study. They were asked to use the Nursing-English platforms and evaluate them based on ease of use, system functionality, and information quality. The SUS provided an overall usability score for each platform, while the PSSUQ offered a more detailed breakdown across system usefulness, information quality, and interface quality. Results revealed an average SUS score of 84.85 across platforms, indicating a high level of user satisfaction. The PSSUQ scores corroborated these findings, with system usefulness and interface quality receiving the highest evaluations. The interactive content and relevance to nursing-specific language were highlighted as strengths, while areas for improvement included navigation and personalization features. Nursing-English platforms offer a generally positive user experience, with opportunities for optimization in user interface and learning customization. This study provides practical insights for enhancing Nursing-English learning tools to support students in preparing for global nursing careers.

Abstract

This study explores pragmatic strategies in Tiktok Live advertisements to understand how sellers influence consumer purchasing decisions through direct sales. Employing a qualitative approach and a case study design, data were collected from two Tiktok Live ad videos featuring apparel and bags. The analysis focused on observing interactions between sellers and viewers, with an emphasis on the use of deixis, implicatures, presuppositions, and speech acts. The findings indicate that the use of personal and spatial deixis, hidden implicatures, presuppositions, as well as directive and commissive speech acts, is highly effective in capturing attention and driving purchases. Additionally, the study identifies “Directive Acts” as the dominant pragmatic category, with a total frequency of 38, indicating that directive actions (commands and instructions) are the most prevalent pragmatic strategy in direct selling on Tiktok Live. Language strategies such as creating urgency, personalizing interactions, and providing detailed product descriptions enhance viewer engagement. Positive viewer responses to various communication strategies underscore the success of direct sales campaigns. This research identified effective communication patterns in Tiktok Live ads and provides practical guidelines for sellers to enhance their communication skills on e-commerce platforms, thereby enriching linguistic pragmatic studies in the context of digital marketing.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how the identity of “Healthy Self” is formed discursively in Instagram captions that promote ideal healthy lifestyles. It investigates the evaluative language and ideological narratives in creating self-representation through social media. The qualitative approach was employed to analyze 26 captions in English tagged with #health, #diet, #healthylifestyle, or #bodygoals. The data were examined using Appraisal Theory (Martin & White) to identify evaluative meanings and Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough) to interpret the ideology underlying the language use. The findings indicate that the captions express various affect, judgment, and appreciation dimensions to construct an image of “a healthy life.” Users tend to impose aspects of emotional recovery, discipline, self-acceptance, and personal empowerment. This discourse indicates a shift from traditional beauty standards towards a more balanced and compassionate approach to health. Still, it contains neoliberal ideological values such as individual responsibility, productivity, and control over the body. Instagram serves as a platform for self-expression and a discursive space that reproduces and negotiates dominant ideology about health. This study confirms the importance of critical reflection on health standards established through seemingly neutral personal narratives.
