Abstract

This study conducts a systematic literature review of academic research published between 2013 and 2023, focusing on the role of local community participation in sustainable tourism. Using the PRISMA 2020 protocol, a total of 111 peer-reviewed journal articles were identified from Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. The synthesis reveals five key thematic areas: participation mechanisms and governance structures, economic empowerment and livelihood diversification, cultural identity and heritage, barriers to meaningful participation, and long-term sustainability through community resilience. The findings show that while community participation is widely promoted in policy and academic discourse, its actual implementation varies greatly in depth and effectiveness. Genuine participation characterized by co-management, local ownership, and inclusive governance leads to improved socio-economic outcomes and greater resilience. However, many initiatives remain tokenistic, hindered by elite dominance, lack of technical capacity, and institutional constraints. Cultural commodification also emerges as a risk when local voices are excluded from decision-making. This review contributes to the literature by offering a decade-long synthesis of how community participation is conceptualized and applied in sustainable tourism. It also highlights practical implications for policymakers, NGOs, and tourism planners. Strengthening local governance and long-term institutional support is essential to ensure that tourism development is both inclusive and sustainable.

Abstract

This study explores the ways in which religious and spiritual practices shape tourism experiences in Indonesia, focusing on how devotion, ritual, and meaning-making intersect with travel. Religious tourism, encompassing pilgrimages, visits to sacred sites, and ritual participation, has become a growing segment of Indonesia’s tourism landscape, reflecting the country’s diverse spiritual traditions. Using a qualitative design, fieldwork was conducted at Islamic pilgrimage destinations in Lombok and Hindu temple sites in Bali, combining semi-structured interviews with pilgrims, local guides, and community leaders, alongside participant observation of ritual practices. Thematic analysis revealed three major dimensions of religious and spiritual tourism. First, participants described motivations rooted not in leisure but in faith obligations, spiritual renewal, and the search for blessings. Second, the experience of ritual participation provided a sense of communal belonging and emotional uplift, demonstrating how tourism can reinforce religious identity. Third, tensions emerged between devotion and commercialization, as some visitors expressed discomfort with the commodification of sacred spaces through ticketing, souvenirs, or staged performances. The findings suggest that religious tourism in Indonesia is not only a cultural and economic practice but also a deeply embodied form of devotion, where faith and travel converge to produce transformative experiences.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology has transformed workforce training and professional development, necessitating the integration of technology-driven learning models to enhance competency acquisition and professional readiness. This study examines the relationships between Training and Professional Development (TPD), Emergency Preparedness Competency (EPC), Effectiveness of Technology Implementation in Education and Training (ETIET), and Performance and Readiness of Educators/Professionals (PREP). Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 70 employees at PT. Aginda Riau Abadi through a structured survey, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Smart PLS was employed for analysis. The findings indicate that TPD and EPC have significant direct effects on PREP, but their influence is stronger when mediated through ETIET, confirming the crucial role of technology in bridging training outcomes and professional performance. The results demonstrate that organizations that invest in VR-based simulations, AI-driven learning platforms, and interactive digital tools can significantly enhance workforce preparedness, crisis management skills, and overall performance. This study highlights the necessity of a blended learning approach that integrates competency-based training with technology-enhanced learning experiences, ensuring professionals are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical, technology-adaptive skills. Future research should explore longitudinal effects of technology-mediated training. Keywords: Training; Professional; Development; Emergency; Preparedness
