Abstract

The New Order era (1966–1998) marks a pivotal period in Indonesia's political and economic history. This study examines the influence of Islamic political economy on the evolution of Islamic economy during this time, using a literature review to explore how political dynamics and economic policies shaped its development. The findings reveal that Islamic political economy faced significant challenges due to the New Order government's focus on capitalist and industrial-oriented policies, which often marginalized sharia-based economic systems. For instance, the Islamic banking sector struggled to expand as regulations were more favorable to conventional banks. Despite these obstacles, intellectual groups and scholars sought to integrate Islamic principles into national policies, with the establishment of Islamic financial institutions like Bank Muamalat Indonesia in 1991 serving as a milestone. By the end of the New Order era, there was a noticeable increase in public interest and awareness of Islamic economy, driven by political shifts and a growing desire for a fairer, Islamic-aligned economic system. Consequently, Islamic economics began to gain wider recognition, eventually becoming an integral part of the national economic framework.

Abstract

This study aims to review the concept of Maqāṣid Sharī'ah in the context of green economy development through urban farming practices. Maqāṣid Sharī'ah, as a framework of Islamic ethics, provides a basis for understanding how Islamic principles can be implemented in an effort to improve economic sustainability through urban agriculture. This research uses literature analysis methods and case studies to explore Maqāṣid Sharī'ah concepts relevant to the development of a green economy. Special focus is given on how urban farming can be an effective instrument to achieve the goals of Maqāṣid Sharī'ah, such as the maintenance of religion, the maintenance of the soul, the maintenance of offspring, the maintenance of reason, and the maintenance of property. The results showed that urban farming practices can contribute positively to the fulfillment of Maqāṣid Sharī'ah's goals. In reality, urban farming not only creates new economic opportunities, but also maintains environmental sustainability, public health, and the distribution of economic justice. The implications of this research provide a foundation for the development of green economy policies and practices that are more in line with Islamic ethical values in the context of urban agriculture.

Abstract

The Indonesian Government, through the National Energy Council, has set a roadmap for achieving zero emissions energy by 2060, with targets for increasing renewable energy use each year. Despite aiming for a 23% target by 2025, the current annual increase in new renewable energy in Indonesia is only 0.55%, far below the required 0.9%. This calls for more progressive policy planning to achieve the new energy target. Challenges include the dispersed nature of Indonesia's renewable energy potential, limited grid capacity, and domestic industry capability. This study examines the impact of renewable and non-renewable energy on Indonesia's economic growth from 1990 to 2023. Employing a quantitative approach with the Error Correction Model (ECM) statistical test, the research explores short-term and long-term relationships among variables. Findings reveal that non-renewable energy consumption (CONRE) positively and significantly impacts economic growth by 6.15%, while renewable energy for electricity (REFE) also has a positive and significant effect of 7.19%. However, renewable energy from water resources (REWR) shows no significant positive impact in the long term, at only 0.19%. In the short term, CONRE positively and significantly affects economic growth by 6.43%, whereas REFE and REWR exhibit insignificant impacts of 0.075% and 0.071% respectively. The study suggests the government should optimize renewable energy potential to achieve more environmentally friendly energy policies, considering factors beyond those studied, such as societal innovation and creativity in identifying energy source potential and gaps.
