Abstract

ABSTRACT: The rabbitfish, Siganus canaliculatus is one of the components in the coastal waters ecosystem (mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef) and also has important economic value for coastal communities, but information is still limited, especially in Papuan waters. This study aims to analyze the size composition and growth patterns of rabbitfish (Siganus canaliculatus) based on habitat differences in the waters of Kwatisore, Yaur District, Nabire Regency. Sampling was carried out at three locations representing various habitat types, such as mangrove, seagrass, and coral reef. The data collected included the total length (mm) and body weight (g) of the fish, which were then analyzed using the length-weight relationship model W = aLb. The results showed that the average body length and average body weight were greater in the coral reef habitat type, but relatively the same among the three research locations. The overall growth pattern (habitat type and location) with a tendency for body length to increase faster than body weight (negative allometric pattern) with a b value ranging from 2.771 to 2.888. The size and growth patterns obtained in this study indicate connectivity between locations and habitats, although both habitat types show different roles in the life cycle of this fish. This study provides important information for ecosystem-based management of the rabbitfish resource in the coastal area of Nabire.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study examines the microhabitat characteristics of the endemic rainbowfish Melanotaenia arfakensis in two major rivers of Tambrauw, Southwest Papua—Api River and Asiti River—focusing on the spatial dynamics of environmental parameters from upstream to downstream. Results indicate that water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), depth, current velocity, and river width show significant spatial trends and directly influence the survival of M. arfakensis. The upstream zones, characterized by lower temperatures (23–26°C), high DO levels (>7 mg/L), moderate current, and stable depth, are identified as optimal habitats and conservation priorities. In contrast, the midstream and downstream zones exhibit gradual habitat degradation, including temperature increases up to 29.1°C and decreased DO levels, approaching the physiological tolerance limits of the species. This decline in microhabitat quality correlates with riparian vegetation loss and anthropogenic pressures. Therefore, an effective in situ conservation strategy must be spatially explicit, adaptive, and participatory—emphasizing thermal refugia protection in the upstream zones, ecological restoration in the midstream, and integrated watershed management with community involvement in the downstream areas. Longitudinal connectivity and the integrity of the entire riverine ecosystem are essential for ensuring the long-term viability of this endemic species.

Abstract

Abstract

Research on the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is carried out in the Kwatisore waters, part of the Cenderawasih Bay National Park (CTNP), Papua, Indonesia. Field observations were conducted for 4 months, from September to December 2016. The objective of the study was to look at the distribution and behavior of whale sharks based on weather conditions, time and place of appearance. The collecting of whale shark data was done by direct observation method which was divided into 2 observation time that is direct observation by researchers between 06.00-17.59 WIT and indirect observation by lift-net fisherman between 18.00-05.59 WIT. The distribution of whale sharks will be analyzed using Geographic Information System (GIS) through digitization process and overlay based on coordinate point. The results of observation and data analysis showed that the frequency of whale shark emergence at 06.00-11.59 WIT is much higher than at 00.00-05.59 WIT that is 148: 18 times. The low frequency of occurrence of these fish at night because in every observation at night, it is difficult to find an individual whale shark that appears. Whale sharks are more visible when the weather is sunny, compared to overcast or rainy days. The results of behavioral observations show that 64% of whale sharks appear to be eating. The rest is playing and just passing by. This is because whale sharks are heavily dependent on the main food of plankton that often lies just below the surface of the waters and or on the surface of the waters.

Abstract

There are many types of bagan fishing gear, gill nets, hand lines, trolling lines, long lines, and bubu fishing gear operated by fishermen in Kaimana. Fishing gear and fishing aids that are poorly controlled, not selective and damage the waters are estimated to trigger excessive fishing and can threaten the lives of marine biota and the sustainability of fish stocks. This study aims to determine the study of environmentally friendly fishing gear in Kaimana Regency and to determine the fish catch based on the fishing gear operated. The study was conducted in 4 villages in Kaimana Regency, namely Air Merah Village, Coa Village, Arguni Village, and Buruway Village in June - August 2024. The method used in the study was a descriptive method with an interview technique with 33 respondents. The results of the interview showed that there were 6 types of fishing gear used by the community, namely, millennium gill nets, floating nets (bagan), Hand Lines, Long Lines, Tonda Lines, and Bubu (Traps). The assessment results of the CCRF (Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries) obtained six types of fishing gear, namely, millennium gill nets with a score of 28.3, floating nets 29.5, hand lines 32.9, longlines 29.8, trolling lines 32.2, and bubu obtained a score of 34.7. These results indicate that the fishing gear operated in Kaimana Regency is very environmentally friendly because it meets the very good CCRF criteria.
