Abstract

West Java produces 1,3 thousand million tons of plastic waste per year. Synthetic plastics have component materials that are not environmentally friendly and can decompose for 20 years, therefor handling is required to overcome the accumulation of plastic waste. 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) is applicable way example using plastic materials that are easily decomposed. Starch in potato skins can be used as a material for bioplastics components, the purpose of this research is to make plastic films made from potato peel waste (Solanum tuberosum L.), as an alternative natural polymer to alternate petroleum materials. Various concentrations of acetic acid (1% and 2%) and variations of carboxymethyl cellulose (1,5 gr and 2,1 gr) were added to the samples and two repetitions, the result of all is 10 samples. Firstly the potato skins were extracted to extract the starch, then the starch was dried at 40 oC for 8 hours. The procedure for making plastic film is to mix the raw materials and gelatinization at 70 oC for 120 minutes. The plastic film is shaped, dried and finally, it does a mechanical test. The research shows that variations of acetic acid and CMC can increase the mechanical properties of tensile strength, elongation at break, thickness, and water uptake. The best plastic film composition was produced using 1% acetic acid and 2,1 gr CMC. The sample has a tensile strength value of 15,72 N/mm2, elongation at break of 14,29%, thickness of 146,17 µm, and water absorption of 365%.

Abstract

To be able to survive in a world of work that changes and develops dynamically, humans are required to continue to improve their abilities periodically. Companies not only require good academic skills but also additional skills that support the company's needs. Relevant abilities (hard skills) balanced with qualified interpersonal skills (soft skills) will be very helpful in work. This ability is useful for creating career opportunities or improving career paths. So, students are required to have quality personal abilities before entering the workforce. The purpose of scientific writing is to provide a description of the self-competencies needed by a chemical engineering graduate as evaluation material for preparation for entering the real world of work. soft skills needed by a chemical engineering graduate, such as analytical skills, problem-solving skills, good communication skills, teamwork, and leadership skills. In this era of globalization, communication skills intersect with foreign language skills such as English and Japanese. Some multinational companies expect their employees to be able to speak foreign languages for the smooth operation of the company. Various efforts have been made by Chemical Engineering at Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang in order to accommodate students and help them develop their potential. Through several activities such as chemical engineering software training, procurement of foreign language classes, and routinely holding public lectures by presenting practitioner teachers from companies. It is hoped that chemical engineering graduates from Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang will have sufficient provisions to face the world of work.

Abstract

Abstract

The development of bioplastic films is one of the efforts to reduce plastic waste. The polymer used as the basic material for making bioplastic films is starch. Potato peel waste can be repurposed by extracting its starch content. This research has the purpose to investigate the influence of adding glycerol and spirulina on the characteristics of bioplastic films made from potato peel starch, and to ascertain the optimum composition of raw materials. Bioplastics were produced by casting method from potato peel starch with variations of glycerol and spirulina. The bioplastic composition in this research includes K0 (0 ml glycerol and 0 grams spirulina), K1 (2.5 ml glycerol and 0.3 grams spirulina), K2 (1.25 ml glycerol and 0.3 grams spirulina), K3 (2.5 ml glycerol and 0.15 grams spirulina), and K4 (1.25 ml glycerol and 0.15 grams spirulina). The characteristics of bioplastic films include thickness testing, tensile strength, elongation at break, and degradation. The results from the characterization of bioplastic films indicate that the addition of glycerol and spirulina is inversely proportional to the tensile strength produced, meaning it decreases. However, the addition of glycerol and spirulina is directly proportional to the percentage of elongation produced, meaning it increases. The addition of spirulina has an impact on the degradation time of bioplastic films. The optimal raw material ratio in this research is found in sample K4, with a tensile strength value of 23.038 MPa, elongation at break of 4.385%, thickness of 0.1367 mm, and complete degradation occurring on the sixth day.
