Abstract

Soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, problem solving and entrepreneurship are increasingly recognised as essential for preparing graduates to thrive in today’s complex and competitive global workforce. This study investigates the integration of these 21st-century soft skills within Malaysian higher education, with a specific focus on the Special Arabic Language Program (SALP) at a public institution. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with SALP alumni and supported by document analysis related to the programme. The findings reveal that both academic and co-curricular components of the SALP have played a significant role in developing students’ soft skills. These experiences have fostered competencies in communication, leadership, social engagement and entrepreneurship, all nurtured within a framework grounded in Islamic values.

Abstract

As a legacy of the colonial era, the people of East Java have established cattle raising and development with four fundamental objectives in mind. To begin with, the cow signifies social standing. Social status in the local community is established not only by the financial resources of individual families, but also by the number of cows housed in a given pasture. Furthermore, the bovine serves as a support animal during the process of mating. The bovine is a sacred animal in East Java, representing matrimony to the local populace. Third, cows as economically beneficial animals. Furthermore, cattle are a commodity in which local economic authorities with vast business networks engage in commerce. Regarding cattle businessmen, this descriptive qualitative study seeks to investigate the socioeconomic networks of lower-class cattle producers who also practise subsistence agriculture. As qualitative research, this study collected field data through three primary methodologies. Initially, a comprehensive interview was undertaken with purchasers, the Magetan regency administration, and the local strong man business network. The second is the observation that was conducted in Plaosan subdistrict animal market and Dele villages in Magetan regency. Furthermore, an extensive focus group discussion (FGD) was conducted with stakeholders from the selling cycle, including local governments, businesses, cattle merchants, and the general community. This study's findings will be disseminated via scientific journals and local media.

Abstract

The urgent need for eldercare funding follows an alarming increase in the population of elderly persons aged 65+ within the last two decades, implying the need for countries to prioritize funding in terms of policy and budget. However, most developing countries like Nigeria are lacking in this regard making the search for optional methods that could ensure funding and provision of functional elderly care more evident. Waqf counts as an avenue for social support especially the waqif of religion and philanthropy. Hence, it is a need for a study of the waqf model. The analysis hinged on the structural functionalist theory as presented by Talcott Parsons, (1951). In the current academic discourse on the need to revive waqf, the central argument of this research agrees that the waqf model needs revival but also an orientation towards addressing the excesses generated by population aging across Muslim countries. From the studies reviewed, it is clear that political practices affect the waqf. In addition, a poor application and execution of funds, mismanagement, misappropriation, corruption, and the poor attitude of the Ulama in reviving the age-long institution among others. The paper concludes that the functional role of the waqf in funding areas of social justice makes the waqf a key institution that can address the challenges of eldercare as posed by the aging of the population across Muslim countries. It recommends eldercare funding in the waqf revival debate in addition to addressing the numerous problems affecting the waqf institution for a successful revival towards addressing contemporary issues in Muslim communities in Nigeria.
