Abstract

Kelantan is known as the Serambi Mekah (Veranda of Mecca) due to the many Islamic scholars from the state who studied in Mecca and returned home to establish pondok (traditional Islamic schools). The late 1800s and early 1900s marked a golden age for these educational centers, with over 100 pondoks operating in the state. However, the number began to decline in the mid-20th century for various reasons. Yet, in the early 2000s, Kelantan witnessed the emergence of many new pondoks, with participation reaching 70 during the 2022 gathering of Kelantan pondoks at Pondok Batu Hitam, Pasir Puteh. This phenomenon indicates a significant increase in the establishment of pondoks in Kelantan. Surprisingly, many of these were founded by young scholars who graduated from various Islamic educational institutions worldwide. This article presents a study on the initiatives of these young scholars in establishing pondoks in Kelantan, exploring various aspects and their relationship with religious well-being in the community and families. The study employs a literature review to gather facts about the history and development of pondoks in Kelantan up to the present, as well as field research where the researcher interviewed some of the involved young scholars to obtain data on this phenomenon, alongside elder scholars for their perspectives on the issue. The researcher also consulted the Royal Malaysia Police and the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Customs Council (MAIK) to gather data regarding the religious well-being of the Islamic community and families following the establishment of these educational centers. The findings indicate that the rapid establishment of pondoks is a noble effort by young scholars to propagate Islam in Kelantan by offering alternative education to the Islamic community and families, preparing students for more advanced studies in Islamic institutions worldwide. However, this growth requires oversight from religious authorities and the Kelantan pondok associations to ensure they operate according to traditional pondok systems. The study also received positive feedback from MAIK and the Royal Malaysia Police, indicating that the initiatives of young scholars in establishing new pondoks do not disrupt the religious well-being of the Islamic community and families in Kelantan; rather, they strengthen community unity and instill high values among students according to the teachings of Ahli al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah in terms of belief, sharia, and ethics.

Abstract

The study of Islamic educational history, vital for intellectual society’s development, is often reduced to rote memorization, placing a cognitive burden on students and diminishing its contemporary relevance. This qualitative case study explored the potential of the Nearpod application to promote creative and active learning of Islamic educational history among Malaysian trainee teachers. Thematic analysis of reflections from 93 first-year trainee teachers revealed four key findings: Nearpod enhanced concentration and comprehension through engaging and interactive experiences; fostered a deeper emotional connection to Islamic history, making learning more meaningful; inspired trainee teachers to develop innovative approaches for teaching Islamic history; and presented challenges due to internet connectivity issues. Nearpod’s multimedia features - audio, video, and interactive questions—created an immersive learning environment, significantly improving understanding, motivation, and enthusiasm for continuous learning. Despite technological challenges, the integration of Nearpod transformed the teaching of Islamic history, addressing the urgent need for engaging and relevant pedagogical methods. These findings highlighted the potential of Nearpod to make Islamic educational history more accessible and impactful. The study’s results carried significant implications for teacher training programs and Islamic education, suggesting that technology-driven approaches could modernize traditional subjects effectively.

Abstract

Purpose – This study was conducted to examine the implementation of the Arabic Language Program (ALP) and to explore how Arabic functions as a foundational medium for the acquisition of Islamic knowledge at a public higher education institution in Malaysia. Design/methods/approach – This study employed a mixed-method exploratory design in two phases. The first phase involved qualitative data collection through semi-structured interviews with 46 informants, classroom observations of two classes and document analysis. These findings were used to construct a quantitative questionnaire, which was then administered in the second phase to 184 respondents. The data were analyzed thematically and statistically with triangulation to ensure depth and validity. Findings – The study identified three overarching themes: (i) Towards a Dynamic Arabic Language Curriculum for Holistic Islamic Education, (ii) A Curriculum That Meets the Pedagogical Needs of Arabic Language and Religious Learning and (iii) Challenges in the Execution of the ALP Curriculum. Research implications/limitations – While the findings indicate that ALP has effectively supported students’ progress in Islamic studies, the long-established structure of the curriculum may give benefit from greater responsiveness to current educational and industrial needs.  Therefore, it is recommended that further studies be conducted to explore lecturers’ perspectives and post-program outcomes in order to assess its long-term impact and sustainability. Originality/value – This study provides an in-depth evaluation of a 40-year-old Arabic preparatory program, emphasizing its role in strengthening Islamic education and identifying key areas for reform. It offers a valuable framework for enhancing Arabic language curriculum in higher education, particularly for non-native speakers especially in Southeast Asia, in support of religious educational objectives.

Abstract

Soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, problem solving and entrepreneurship are increasingly recognised as essential for preparing graduates to thrive in today’s complex and competitive global workforce. This study investigates the integration of these 21st-century soft skills within Malaysian higher education, with a specific focus on the Special Arabic Language Program (SALP) at a public institution. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with SALP alumni and supported by document analysis related to the programme. The findings reveal that both academic and co-curricular components of the SALP have played a significant role in developing students’ soft skills. These experiences have fostered competencies in communication, leadership, social engagement and entrepreneurship, all nurtured within a framework grounded in Islamic values.

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in advancing comprehensive and balanced human capital development. Amid rapid globalization, digital transformation, and the erosion of moral values, HEIs face increasing challenges in cultivating well-rounded individuals who can meet contemporary demands while upholding ethical and spiritual principles. As market-driven education increasingly prioritizes technical and professional competencies, the nurturing of moral integrity and holistic growth is often neglected. Therefore, this study investigates how the Arabic Language Education Program contributes to holistic human capital development through Islamic educational leadership, focusing on students’ lived experiences, leadership formation, and value-based educational practices. Employing a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design, the research commenced with qualitative data collection through interviews with 50 informants and document analysis, followed by a quantitative survey involving 184 respondents. Data were analyzed thematically and descriptively, and findings from both phases were triangulated to enhance interpretive validity. The study identifies four principal dimensions of human capital development: (i) Leadership Experiences and Opportunities, (ii) Religious Development and Spiritual Strengthening, (iii) Local and Socio-Cultural Influences, and (iv) Challenges and Obstacles in Human Capital Development. The findings provide critical insights for policymakers and stakeholders in refining leadership policies and educational strategies, thereby reinforcing the foundations of human development agendas at both national and global levels.
