Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral health problems in Indonesia that affects supporting tissues of the teeth. Porphyromonas gingivalis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Alternative therapy with natural plant extracts, including pineapple (Ananas comosus) hump extract may inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Objective: To determine the effect of pineapple hump extract on bacterial growth and adhesion of Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilms. Method: The bacterial inhibition test was performed by the agar well diffusion method, and biofilm density measurements were made using the biofilm assay method. Results: Pineapple hump extract can inhibit bacterial growth optimally at a concentration of 100%, with an average zone of inhibition of 7.3 mm. The extract at a 50% concentration can eradicate the biofilms in a 6 h incubation time with an average OD of 0.124. The Shapiro-Wilk method confirmed a normal distribution of the data. Both one-way ANOVA and post hoc test showed a significant difference between the inhibitory ability of pineapple hump extract and between concentrations to restrict formation of Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilms. Conclusion: Pineapple hump extract was able to inhibit bacterial growth and eradicate the adhesion of Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilms in vitro.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries and gingivitis are the most prevalent oral health problems in Indonesian elementary school children. Predictors that are significantly associated with dental caries and gingivitis in children are the parents’ socioeconomic status and children’s oral health behavior. Terbanggi Besar district is the largest area and population in Lampung Province. The lack of updated dental and oral health data needs to be refined to address oral health disparities and achieve improvements. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district, Central Lampung. Method: This cross-sectional study elected 410 students from 5 public elementary schools using convenience sampling. Sociodemographic and oral health behavior data were retrieved from a self-administered questionnaire. In addition, a clinical examination consisted of the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index, the Gingival Index (GI), and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHIS). The Mann-Whitney statistical test was used to analyze the differences in dental caries severity and gingival status between selected variables. Results: Dental caries was present in 75.6% of children, while gingivitis was present in 52% of children. The mean DMFT score was significantly higher in children with poor oral hygiene (2.80 + 2.67, p = 0.001). The mean GI score was significantly higher in children aged 12 years old or above (0.37 + 0.48, p = 0.025) and in those that had unemployed fathers (0.25 + 0.29, p = 0.030) and poor oral hygiene (0.31 + 0.40, p = 0.000). Conclusion: Improving dental and oral health promotion with regard to elementary school children is highly recommended. The dental and oral health status of grade V and VI elementary school children in Terbanggi Besar district in Central Lampung was found to be moderate, with a high prevalence of dental caries.

Abstract

Introduction: In Indonesia, periodontal disease is one of the dental and oral diseases with the highest prevalence. Bacteria in subgingival plaque can cause periodontal disease, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Herbal medicine has potential as an alternative in the treatment of periodontal disease, for example, rambutan leaves (Nephelium lappaceum L.) are known to have antibacterial properties because they contain flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Objective: To determine the effects of rambutan leaf extract (Nephelium lappaceum L.) on development of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum biofilms. Methods: This study was carried out using the biofilm assay method with crystal violet staining and rambutan leaf extract (Nephelium lappaceum L.) with concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.125% were used as the test material. A microplate reader with a wavelength of 490 nm was used to measure the biofilm density of Porpyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 and Fusobacterium nucleatum ATCC 25586. The data obtained were then analyzed statistically using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The most effective concentration of rambutan leaf extract for inhibiting biofilm development at 24 hours incubation was a 100% concentration with an average optical density (OD) of 0.147 against Porphyromonas gingivalis and a 100% concentration with an average OD of 0.077 against Fusobacterium nucleatum. Conclusion: Rambutan leaf extract (Nephelium lappaceum L.) is capable of inhibiting the development of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum biofilms, respectively.

Abstract

One of the things that contribute to global warming and environmental damage is medical waste from dental practice. Green Dentistry is an eco-friendly concept of dental practice. Green Dentistry is present as a solution to preserve natural resources, reducing energy use and lessen the waste produced. This study aimed to obtain an overview of knowledge, attitudes, and practice of green dentistry among dentists and dental students. This scoping review uses a literature search on the Google Scholar database guided by PRISMA. The study population was dentists and dental students. Inclusion criteria were observational studies on green dentistry published during 2018 - 2022 in English and Indonesian language. Articles were selected based on tittle, abstract and full text. Extracted data was presented in tables and summarized for an overview of evidence. From 88 articles obtained, 11 articles were included in this review. Each article contains knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding green dentistry, eco-friendly practices in dental clinic, and medical waste management. Each article uses a questionnaire with various number of domains and items. Knowledge, attitudes, and practice of dentists and dental students regarding green dentistry are still not evenly distributed. Postgraduate dentists were found to have better knowledge. Barriers that were often encountered are cost factors and lack of training or information. Knowledge regarding green dentistry concept among dentist and dental students still needs to be improved. Providing information about specific actions related to the concept of green dentistry is necessary.
