Abstract

Anterior tooth trauma often occurs in children because children are more active than adults and their coordination and assessment of conditions are not good enough, so they often fall while learning to walk, run, play and exercise. Trauma that occurs to a child's teeth can interfere speech, chewing, aesthetics and the eruption of permanent teeth, thereby disrupting the growth and development of the teeth and jaw. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the approach regarding the first treatment of trauma to primary teeth for parents and children. The choice of Community Service target at RA Al-Muttaqin was due to a request from the school principal as community leader. Education and training activities were carried out on July 27 2023 for a total of 20 teachers and parents. The aim of this activity is to increase knowledge and motivate changes in attitudes and behavior in maintaining oral health and regarding first care for primary tooth trauma. The initial assessment of knowledge and attitudes regarding primary care for trauma to primary teeth and the mouth of teachers was carried out through a pre-test. Abstract

Infections caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa present significant challenges in clinical practice, particularly due to rising resistance to conventional antibiotics. The development of environmentally friendly, nanotechnology-based antibacterial agents is considered a promising alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a nanocomposite comprising silver nitrate (AgNO₃), Cymbopogon citratus leaf extract, and chitosan against P. aeruginosa. The nanocomposite was synthesized using a green synthesis method, with plant extract serving as a natural reducing agent and chitosan as a nanoparticle stabilizer. Antibacterial activity was assessed via disk diffusion against five concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 15, 25, and 50 mg/mL), and compared to positive (chlorhexidine) and negative (acetic acid) controls. The results showed that the 6.25 mg/mL concentration produced the largest inhibition zone (average 11 mm), although it did not surpass the effectiveness of chlorhexidine. The inhibition zones remained stable for up to 72 hours, indicating sustained antibacterial activity. A decline in efficacy at 50 mg/mL was observed, likely due to nanoparticle aggregation and biological saturation. These findings support the potential of AgNO₃–C. citratus–chitosan nanocomposite as a natural-based alternative antibacterial agent. Further studies are recommended to characterize its physicochemical properties, elucidate its mechanism of action, and evaluate its toxicity and applicability in pharmaceutical and biomedical contexts.

Abstract

Ameloblastoma, a tumor located in the jaw, grows slowly but locally invasive. Ameloblastoma expands in the jaw based on a mechanism resorbing the surrounding bone. To date, the bone resorption mechanisms of ameloblastoma are associated with the expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor (NF)-κB (RANK) ligand (RANKL), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. RANKL plays an important role in generating osteoclastogenesis. MMPs degrade the extracellular matrix. TNF-α can induce the formation of osteoclast and modulate the MMPs. In this review the bone resorption mechanism of ameloblastoma as well its signaling pathway will be disclosed. Keywords: Ameloblastoma, RANKL, MMPs, TNF-α.

Abstract

Nanocomposites are materials formed by combining two components, one or both of which are on the nanometer scale. The nanocomposite in this study is a combination of chitosan and silver nanoparticles produced through the synthesis of silver nitrate using Cymbopogon citratus extract. Silver nanoparticles have antibacterial abilities that can be utilized to overcome various diseases. However, their antibacterial properties may be reduced due to the tendency of silver nanoparticles to agglomerate. This can be overcome by the addition of chitosan as a stabilizing agent to prevent agglomeration and maintain the antibacterial effectiveness of silver nanoparticles. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a nanocomposite formed by combining chitosan and silver nanoparticles synthesized using Cymbopogon citratus extract against Staphylococcus aureus through the diffusion method. The samples used included nanocomposites at concentrations of 6.25 mg/mL, 12.5 mg/mL, 15 mg/mL, 25 mg/mL, and 50 mg/mL, amoxicillin as a positive control, Acetic acid, and distilled water as negative controls. The results of antibacterial activity testing showed that all nanocomposite test concentrations had the ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus as evidenced by the formation of an inhibition zone around the disc paper. However, the highest antibacterial activity shown by the nanocomposites was still lower compared to the antibacterial activity of amoxicillin Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Chitosan, Cymbopogon citratus, Silver nanoparticles, Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

Objectives: To describe radicular cysts and differentiate them from radiographically similar cysts such as odontogenic keratocysts. Case Report: A 21-year-old female patient presented to the Dental and Oral Hospital with a primary complaint of residual root fragments in the left mandibular region, for which she requested extraction. Extraoral clinical examination revealed no facial asymmetry, swelling, or tenderness, and the region was asymptomatic upon palpation. The patient reported no relevant systemic medical history. Panoramic radiographic examination demonstrated a well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion extending from the apical third of tooth 36 to the periapical areas of teeth 35, 37, and 38. Given the limitations in diagnostic detail offered by conventional periapical radiography, a Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan was subsequently performed. Multiplanar reconstruction images from the CBCT revealed a radiolucent lesion extending from the periapical area of tooth 35, with evidence of compression on the mandibular canal. Conclusion: Radicular cysts are the most common type of odontogenic cyst and are associated with dental inflammation. Radicular cysts and OKCs have a similar radiographic appearance, leading to confusion between the two. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) offers three-dimensional imaging that allows a comprehensive assessment of the lesion's size, extent, and relationship to adjacent anatomic structures, allowing the characteristics of both radicular lesions and OKCs to be clearly demonstrated. The characteristics of each lesion can be clearly described, making CBCT a very helpful modality in these cases. Keywords: Cone Beam Computed Tomography, odontogenic cyst, radicular cyst
