Abstract

One natural ingredient that has the potential to heal wounds is betel leaf. This study aimed to analyze the healing effect of Incision wounds in Wistar rats when administering a microemulsion combination of green and red betel leaf extracts. This research begins with sample collection, drying process, and extraction. The extract was then formulated into emulgel as a microemulsion in three formulations. These three formulas, along with a positive control and a negative control, were tested on each Wistar rat incision wound. The results of the research showed that emulgel formula 3, which was tested on mice, had the best ability to heal wounds for an average of 2.5 days and kept the mice's body temperature normal; 36.6oC. Formula 3 contains 5% South Kalimantan red betel, 5% South Kalimantan green betel, 5% Central Kalimantan red betel, and 5% Central Kalimantan green betel. This proves that the combination of formula 3 can heal wounds and body temperature in experimental mice. Further research is needed to find the best composition that produces faster, more complete wound healing effects and safely impacts experimental animals.

Abstract

Indonesia is facing an aging society since the proportion of the elderly was almost 10% of the total population. This situation is reflected by the increasing total number of elderlies, dependency ratio, and life expectancy. Aim: This study aimed to describe the distribution of total score of mental health and activity daily life (ADL) among middle age and elderly in Indonesia. This study used pooled data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 4 and wave 5. It was conducted in 2007 and 2014. The sample size of this study consisted of middle age (40 to 59 years old) and elderly (60 years old and up). Results: The findings of this study revealed that from 2007 to 2014, the total score of mental health problems was increasing, and also the total score of activity daily life (ADL). Middle age and elderly in Indonesia had an increased number of depressions, but the total majority of them had a higher ability to do daily activity life (ADL). According to an aging population that faced the Indonesian population, this study can describe the increasing number of depressed but increasing their ability of them to do daily activity life (ADL).

Abstract

Introduction: Premature rupture of membranes (KPD) refers to the amniotic sac rupture before the onset of labor. It occurs in approximately 10% of pregnancies, with 7% in term and 3% in preterm pregnancies. While KPD itself does not directly cause maternal death, it is a significant precursor to infections that can lead to maternal and fetal mortality. Current diagnostic methods for KPD primarily utilize synthetic litmus paper to detect pH changes. However, natural alternatives such as turmeric, a traditional plant-based pH indicator, offer a promising and cost-effective solution. Turmeric contains coumarin, a compound with litmus-like properties, enabling it to identify KPD by reacting with acidic amniotic fluid. Materials and Method: This experimental study was conducted at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital, Banjarmasin City, between January and July 2024. The participants included pregnant women identified as being at risk of KPD. The study explored the efficacy of pantyliners infused with turmeric extract as a diagnostic tool for KPD detection. Results: The findings revealed a significant correlation (ρ < α 0.05) between the color change in turmeric-infused pantyliners and KPD diagnosis. This demonstrates the potential of turmeric-infused pantyliners as a reliable and efficient detection tool for KPD. Discussion/Suggestions: With a diagnostic accuracy of 90%, turmeric-infused pantyliners present a non-invasive, accessible method for early KPD detection. Further studies are recommended to optimize pantyliner formulations, particularly those containing curcumin, and to conduct extensive clinical trials on larger populations.

Abstract

Based on data from the World Health Organization in 2020, the incidence of dysmenorrhea was 1,769,425 (90%) women who suffered from dysmenorrhea, with 10-16% suffering from severe dysmenorrhea. The problem of pain is very disruptive to activities, so prevention and treatment of pain must be a concern. Ginger is a natural ingredient that grows in South Kalimantan and is empirically used to treat pain. The study aimed to determine the analgesic effects and toxicity of red and white ginger from Banjarmasin and Banjar Regency. The nutrient content profile of the soil where the ginger grew was analyzed, and it was determined by nitrogen content, cation exchange capacity, and soil pH. The content of active compound groups was analyzed using specific reagents to determine the presence of active compounds. Determination of total phenolic levels using a colorimetric method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The instant ginger formula was optimized with organoleptic test result parameters. Acute toxicity tests using male Wistar rats with observations for 14 days. Analgesic tests were conducted on Mus musculus using the acetic acid writhing test. The results showed that the highest nitrogen (1,34%), cation exchange capacity (29.22 me/100 g), and soil pH levels (6,89) were in the soil where the ginger samples from Banjar Regency grew. The chemical compound content in all gingers contained the same phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. The levels of marker compounds in succession from Banjarmasin red ginger, Banjarmasin white ginger, Banjar Regency red ginger, and Banjar Regency white ginger were 7.43%, 6.26%, 8.52%, and 7.12%, respectively. The results of formula optimization showed that all gingers had a sweet and spicy taste, a distinctive odor, powder form, and a reddish-brown color in red ginger and pale yellow in white ginger. The toxicity test results showed that at doses of 300 mg/Kg BW and 2000 mg/Kg BW, there was no toxic effect on the administration of ginger extract. Analgesic activity showed that all gingers had an analgesic effect at a dose of 200 mg/Kg BW. The analgesic effects from the strongest to the lowest were red ginger from Banjar Regency, red ginger from Banjarmasin, white ginger from Banjar Regency, and white ginger from Banjarmasin. This study concludes that red ginger from Banjar Regency has the most potent analgesic activity and no toxicity for all ginger.

Abstract

Contraceptive use is important in birth control and family planning, with various methods tailored to individual needs and health conditions. This study aims to explore more deeply the characteristics of service providers and the side effects of contraception used in Indonesia. This study used secondary data from the Indonesian Family Survey (IFLS) to analyze contraceptive side effects in 8,167 women selected through stratified random sampling. The main focus was the type of health service provider, with analysis using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate techniques through binary logistic regression. Nearly 40% of women experience contraceptive side effects, influenced by age, provider type, and contraceptive method. Women who receive services from community health centers or private clinics tend to experience fewer side effects than those who receive services from hospitals. Use of the pill or permanent methods is also associated with fewer side effects. Therefore, education and training for health care providers need to be improved to ensure appropriate counseling.
